Daegerty
Is it allowed, or is it not allowed? I was reading various sites that say it isn't allowed and others that say it is. What is the situation there now?
MJ
It is actively discouraged, due to damage left by campers and lack of respect of the birds breeding grounds.
Daegerty
Is there any safe place to camp without disturbing the birds? I won't leave a mess or anything
shetlandpeat
Here is the answer Camping is not permitted on the island. Accommodation and meals are offered at the Fair Isle Lodge & Bird Observatory or B&Bs in the south of island in the main populated area where there is also a shop and post office. http://www.iknow-scotland.co.uk/tourist_information/scottish_islands/shetland_isles/fair_isle_shetland.htm It does seem a shame they will not allow camping around the accommodation, maybe the noise? I have seen that before but also sites that contradict it. Since its owned by the Scottish National Trust they have to follow their policy and possibly don't have the same amount of power as before to keep the campers out. A case of a few messers ruining it for everyone else yet again I see. Have been trying to contact the National Trust over this to get a clear answer but they gave me a number that goes straight to voicemail
Ghostrider
^^ Probably the best way is to talk with someone on the Fair Isle. ie. They will be the ones who'll ultimately either welcome you, tolerate you, or evict you, regardless of what some pen pusher somewhere in Scotland says. Someplace like the shop/Post Office is probably the most "impartial" "public" place to ask at. Their contact details are here, which as far as I'm aware are still correct. They'll probably only answer during their business hours though, and I don't know what those are http://shetlopedia.com/Stackhoull_Stores
