righter Posted August 10, 2011 Report Share Posted August 10, 2011 Shetland shops are unlikely to be able to compete on price from the internet. Sometimes they can,but not often in my experience. Where they could compete is on service and knowledge of product. They don`t unfortunately... a shrug and a "don`t know" is not going to cut it. when I lived south I would often buy...and still do,from John Lewis,not because they were cheaper,but because of the service i got. If I was buying a large item,I would want to discuss it at length with someone,John Lewis staff are excellent....probably because their partnership with the company is a huge incentive to know the product and give good service. Shetland shops need to train staff better.They could emphasise their "immediacy"...you can have it NOW...and if it breaks we will fix it quickly because we are local. engineer21 Posted August 10, 2011 Report Share Posted August 10, 2011 Also Geordie Robertson got another purchase from me as he was competitive with amazon, plus i got it same day. i will still shop around but most likely they will get my custom! the Hydro is another story though! dont disagree that some shops should open on sundays and even a little later through the week i.e 6pm. 5pm most ppl finish work so why not give them a chance to pick up some bits on way home. also think the council should consider there rates on shops if they really want to keep shops they should help them out after all isnt that something our oil money is ment to be used for?? just my 2 pence worth! I've actually found the staff in the Hydro to be extremely helpful and friendly. When I did have a query, the staff member wasn't sure but went away and asked and came back with the correct information. Delivery of large items was swift too. That I accept given remote location BUT it's the selling cheap crap for inflated prices that bugs me. upnorth76 Posted August 10, 2011 Report Share Posted August 10, 2011 service 2nd to none, shops... s**t. i think whoever makes the decision about new stores opening in the town centre needs a reality check, as the big clothes store, music stores, food chains etc are the streets only hope of surving against a certain supermarket & internet shopping. but as this is shetland and the folk who make the decisions do not seek change nor progress within lerwick... the big stores from the mainland will never be allowed in. Running_girl24 Posted August 10, 2011 Author Report Share Posted August 10, 2011 I have really been put off the Peerie Shop recently as i ordered a cheese and branson sandwich with salad to be ready in 10 minutes. I went there and paid and it wasn't ready, waited another 10 or so minutes when they weren't exactly rushed off their feet. I had specificly asked for there to be salad in the sandwich and i got back to eat it at my work and the cheese was massive lumps not grated properly, and no salad!! I should have complained but couldn't be bothered to go back and complain after the 20 minute wait i'd already had. I will not be going back there any time soon!!
