peeriebryan
I was amazed to see on the BBC News that the US government are considering the recent suicide of Guantanamo Bay inmates as an act of war. It really beggars belief. Torture the men till they can't take it anymore, then when they do snap and decide to end it, the US government considers it as an attack I'm going to read up a bit more before posting again, as I am truly astounded by what I just heard coming out of the Military spokesman's mouth
Distortio
truly amazing. did he fly himself blindfolded into the cell wall and explode on impact?
Njugle
Yep, you heard correctly peeriebryan "an act of asymetrical war" - no less http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=861802006 http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/content/2006/s1661280.htm and by way of background: Suicide attempts are not a new development -http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4204027.stm
ChristopherWilliamThomson
We are in the beginning of the flowering of Fascism in democracy. Our country is very much a player in this.
JustMe
Quote from the Scotsman One of the detainees was a mid or high-level al-Qaeda operative, while another had been captured in Afghanistan and participated in a riot at a prison there, Rear-Admiral Harris said. The third belonged to a splinter group. There is something missing from this paragraph......ALLEGED. And while the US continues to hold people in illegal detention at Guantamano without any sort of trial they will remain alleged terrorists etc.

Njugle
US authorities describe the deaths as 'asymmetric warfare against us' I would have thought the invasion of Iraq would be more appropriately called 'asymmetric' warfare, but any roads, it's a new one on me. I'll bet $1 George Dubya didn't think that one up.
turrifield
We are in the beginning of the flowering of Fascism in democracy. Our country is very much a player in this. I agree but when did we become a democracy? A vote every few years is not the only measure of a democratic state but it is a small step to becoming one. He probably didn't think it it probably just fell out of his mouth while he was trying to say "an act of war", and one of his more intelligent elves said "thats quite good sir we should use that"
HacksawDuggan
The story I read didn't have the quote of an 'asymmetrical war', but spoke of the inmates suicides being an 'act of holy war', presumably referring to the Muslim fundamentalist belief of dying as a martyr. A bit of a middle finger to America, so to speak. Though whether it is correct to say so is another matter.
Distortio
maybe they just killed themselves at a bit of a jaunty angle.
Lynnie
maybe they just killed themselves at a bit of a jaunty angle. It never ceases to amaze me how a country that's so damn hot on civil rights, individual rights, blahblahblah can be so hypocritical. It's been five years..... how many trials have there been? Are they just planning on keeping them all in cages until they all commit suicide... and problem solved?? And if we were shocked at the Abu Ghraib pictures, I shudder to think what snapshots may come out of Guantanamo where the Americans are accountable to noone......... Ally
It's madness, but the yanks are so brainwashed that they think it's all justified. Check out this interview with Bill O'Rielly, one of the top political pundits on fox news - basically a rabid Bush fan. About two minutes into the interview the subject of Guantanamo bay comes up - his reaction is maddening, but so typical. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMAikHTIJi4&search=Bill%20O%27Rielly
