As with One World Birth, now is the time to start asking some very serious questions about how we give birth, at a Midwife Led Unit, Consultant unit and home here in the UK.

Mothers need to be asking questions about "risks "of giving birth in a hospital as well as other settings.

How many mothers when booking their pregnancy for Midwife care in hospital/Consultent led hospital/Home are not given all the facts. All mothers should also be given potential risks outlined to them when birthing in a hospital so that they can make a proper informed choice where to birth. To not do this, does not comply with principles of informed consent.

There are risks to giving birth in hosptal and these are very rarely discussed and no mother appears to be asked to sign any consent form pointing out any of these potential risks ?

Studies have already demonstrated and proved with evidenced based research that a mother having 2nd and subsequent babies, and a mother is fit and well and no other complications it is as safe to birth at home as in hospital.

How many mothers are told by their booking midwife you actually have 3 options where you like to birth. It just automatically assumed you will be booked for MLU OR Consultant led care. Where is the informed choice for mothers in that?

Mangement are telling the midwives what to say to the mothers so as to get mothers to choose mangement's place of birth.

Most mothers may be quite happy to birth in hospital which absolutely fine, but what is so very wrong is not to supply /inform women of any potential risks of doing so, but will be quite happy to scare women using variety of tatics out of birthing at home.

Mothers are quite intelligent enough when given ALL the facts and ALL the options to make a decision where to birth for themselves, but to try and deny women of choice is so very very wrong.

We need mothers to start questioning ALL their options at booking in and throughout their antenatal postnatal care. What do mothers want or would like and these should be put to management .

Too many mothers with lack of information just go along with whatever is being suggested, and nobody likes to rock the boat as certain parts of UK are a little more close knitted than others making it difficult sometimes to speak out freely, so women put up and shut up which is what some mangements want.

More searching questions do need be asked, about the care mothers would like to see overall.

Example, i'm sure there is more when mothers start discussing openly.

Pehaps more community midwives putting birth and family back into heart of our communities maybe a vision for "2020"

Informed choice for all of the 3 options of where to birth and potential risk factors for all 3 options.

For mothers not to be automatically dicharged by day 10 postnatally, but if mother feels still need support of a midwife beyond this, this should be available rather than quickly discharging to the health visitors, there appears to be sense urgency to get mothers off the books so to speak as quickly as possible but for some mothers this may not be in their best interest .

The more we question the more we learn .The more women become informed about whats right for them in their circumstances.

Together with One World Birth we are making changes that need to happen and the more childbirth issues are discussed the better for all.

If top[ midwifery agree its time to start asking some veryu important questions.

Here is another excellent site , giving again evidenced based research, positive and inspiring birth stories with some excellent links to mini videos , of some natural active breech births ,and other natural births amonst other videos.

The site belongs to Lisa Barrett a trained UK midwife who used to be charge of a large matrnity unit in the UK.

Lisa has now moved to Australia with her family where she is currently working in the community.

However Lisa regularly comes back to the Uk to attend conferences, workshops .

It really is an inspiring and positive site for any mother to be , whether birthing in hospital or at home and is a credit to her.

Congratulations Lisa on your fantsatic site.

Hi ,Here is extract taken from the website above about the advantages of being a homebirth dad,and it just sooooo true.

If the health service has not managed to dissuade the mothers from homebirthing the next course of action is to work on the fathers using fear tatics. So big advantage do your research, discuss with your partner so your well prepared for the medical profession. Keep in mind all the benefits your not told about as a homebirth dad.

You are so much more in control and comfortable and speaking from experience dads are just so much more part of the whole birthing process whether at business end or not, you do not have to be separated from the new family unit in those precious hours to go home only to come back again etc etc.
