The benefits of delayed cord clamping are now well proven and preferably even better when the cord is clamped AFTER the placenta has been delivered. However just clamping the cord after 2-20 minutes is far better practice now and prevents the baby losing its blood (up to a 1/3) left trapped behind in the placenta and the cord. The baby also receives it's vital stem cells which has proven health benefits for the newborn and it's future.

Immediately clamping the cord is becomming increasing outdated practice and offers no benifits to an otherwise healthy mum or baby in fact even in some cases of a sick baby the practice of leaving the cord unclamped for long as possible helps improve the sick baby's outcome. All the time the baby is attached to the cord and is delivered the baby is receiving oxygen, remains of the baby own blood and those vital stem cells, which is all lost when cord is immediately clamped and cut.

 

On the subject of delayed cord clamping is this article, one does have to wonder sometimes what earth is actually going through some peoples thinking when mother nature already thought this out for herself.

Here is an excellent video presentation on the benefits of Delayed Cord Clamping.

Its quite a long presentation, but really is very good explaining why Delayed cord Clamping is so important to both mother and baby and all the benefits of doing so.

 

Every mother should be told the benefits of this and why its so important so she may become fully informed about her babies blood and not just to discuss 3rd stage as to whether to have an artifical injection to deliver the placenta or not. Many mothers still do not know

a)what exactly placental transfusion is

b)The benefits.

 

Giving an artificial injection to deliver the placenta in most cases has been done out of habit following normal healthy birth -quite frightening. Mothers must be in possession of all the facts about her and her babies 3rd stage to make an informed choice whether to accept injection or not.

 

Some mothers seem to just accept injection to hurry along the placenta not realising what their babies are missing out on. It needs to be fully explained and talking to many mothers, many are not aware exactly what a natural physiological 3rd stage really involves and the benefits of placental transfer and how exactly its achieved sucessfully with Delayed Cord Clamping.

 

To early cord clamp, you could argue that its another unecessary medical intervention done more purely for convinience in majority of cases, following a normal natural healthy birth.

 

Full Placental transfer does not appear to be dicussed very much which is strange, considering the overwhelming evidence supporting the practice and no obvious disadvantage. You have to question why its not the normal standard practice as this is what nature intended in healthy births??

Anyway, for health professionals and all mothers this video is excellent and very informative.

Thankyou, I'm really hope mothers will see this as real option here in Shetland and not to be put off by the maternity unit.

 

From speaking to mothers there is a serious interest to homebirthing , you may have to fight/navigate the system, but its all possible and no medical professional can tell you cannot have a homebirth SEE AIMS. Even if they say your "high risk", look at your options do your research its always your choice and you must be supported in that choice so with good balanced information a mother can make proper informed choice of her risks if any.

Having had homebirths myself and 2 recently here, I'm only too happy give mothers any information if I can help, as I mentioned previously the homebirth reference site is excellent place to start if you are thinking of having one or considering one take a good look around it.

 

There is a lot of myths, scare stories, etc. etc. and it's important to get over to mothers here the facts , it is a real option .

 

i'm getting information all the time from mothers asking about homebirthing some just out of curioity, others say like one but partners are unsure and some been told they cannot have one which clearly not true.

The more mothers are informed of ALL options can only be positive thing.

It may not be right for everyone but for some it may be, no matter how small the group of mothers who wish this option, it should always be an option throughout whole pregnancy even if you decide late on that you wish to homebirth. You can also always plan homebirth and change your mind later if you decide to .
