Thank you, Still-Dellin and others for all your excellent photos - highlight of my evening - checking AIS and the boat & plane threads here for new photos :)

 

On AIS ships map, there's one thing that puzzles me - sometimes a boat is described as "Wing in grnd" - what is that an abbreviation for? Thanks.

Amen to that! Always a pleasant change to the usual sharn going on elsewhere here.

 

As for "Wing in grnd" - I had always assumed it meant "wing in ground effect" - such as the mighty Ekranoplan, basically a seaplane that can't truly fly (using the same effect that allows landing aircraft to "float" above the runway just before touching down). I suspect whoever selected the vessel type clicked on the wrong option.
