Obviously things are different for businesses, hospitals etc and as such the option to have a more reliable service, or an contract which offers compensation for loss of any relevant utility, or insurance to cover backup facilities, is desirable if not essential. Apology accepted but many sole traders like myself work out of domestic properties and utility companies are well aware of this. Yes, it would be great to have a generator and something I'd like to purchase. Business interruption insurance policies are usually worded along the lines of "accidental loss of power". We're not connected to the National Grid so don't have the network of capacity to instantly pick up the load if Lerwick or Sullom falls over.There may be standby machines idling in both stations but I don't think that either can pick up say a 12MW loss instantaneously, as might happen if the supply from SVT was lost. Somebody has to lose power as part of the loadshed when this happens.I don't think it's realistic to expect a completely uninterrupted domestic power supply. Places that really need this have to make their own arrangements with battery or generator back up. It's a pity there wasn't a gas pipeline laid down to Lerwick in the eighties. I would be surprised if todays problems was anything to do with a lack of fuel? There is plenty of generating capacity at SVT. It was commercial decisions that failed to get more of it on the local grid.Strangely, Total also seem to have failed to do a deal on supply from SV, so will be building their own generating station. Today, it was like a switch tripping repeatedly. It would be on for 1 second or less and then off again! I unplugged the router in the end. Only one computer was on when it first went off but I went around switching things off at the plug as I can't see how half a second of power over and over again was doing much good! Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that it was a lack of fuel, just an observation that we have had a good supply of clean burning gas in Shetland for the last 30 years. It's either a case of bringing this fuel to the centre of your transmission network (Lerwick) or shifting your generation to the fuel source (Sullom) and have to rejig your transmission routes.
