You can get a device called a UPS (Uninterupted Power Supply) for your more sensitive electrical items. It consists of a small battery pack (depends on how long you need an alternative supply for), an inverter and some electronics. If the power were to fluctuate, it will take over for as long as there is charge in the batteries (which are charged when there is a mains supply).

UPS is a good solution but be careful to pick one with a rating adequate for the systems you are wanting to support. At the minimum I'd suggest ensuring that sensitive equipment has a surge suppressor inline before the power. Belkin make a decent surge suppressing multi-block which also has in and out ports for telephone lines so saving your broadband router from being spiked down that connection too.

Amazon have a relatively cheap 700VA unit from APC which should protect equipment drawing up to a total of 3 Amps. The surge suppressor block I use from Belkin is also on Amazon.

Um, something is seriously odd with our electricity supply this morning. The lights all went out and the fan heater in the kitchen turned off. We checked the fuse box(?) and all the switches were on. If you switch a light on it takes ages for it to actually turn on and it'll only shine dimly. There isn't enough juice to run the radio, yet the broadband and telephone seem to be fine. Is this happening to other folk or is it just our house and we should call in someone to fix it before all the storage heaters stop working and we freeze to death?
