is it no whats at the root of it ?? , word on the street (or ocean as the case might be) that it was the supposed anti terror money laundering laws that sparked the whole thing off, movements of money drawing the attention of the authorities ?? leading on to fishermen getting humped yet again. Not entirely attempting to excuse them , but if a bit of cash for the back pocket is quite ok by any way possible for fat cats n MPs, how come they are gettin clean away wi it ??

It might make things easier for those of us not in the know if you can post a reference to the story? Thanks.

Quite right - so they should TeeAyBee! A link to a news site is a minimum but a quote would be nice too.

bit more than a bit of spare cash. is the quota not still reduced because of the odd box or two of black fish.

If the UK had had the good sense in '73 to stay out of the EEC, declare a 200 mile/median limit, and throw everyone else out of it. There would be a considerably more properous fishing industry, and far less temptation to do behind closed doors "cash" deals.

Black markets are, generally speaking, mostly always created as a result of prevailing Government policy, this is just one more example.

black fish landings are wrong , everybody knows it and this is an extension of it being clamped down on. Now , point is , how come all these MPs and thier expenses frauds and fat cts in the bank helping themselves are no in bother, i dont see anybody criticising them loudly or demanding cuts or prosecutions

Fraud is fraud - if proven.

Some MP's expenses claims are under investigation for fraud so let's see - most likely come to nothing. Don't believe anyone has defrauded a bank just screwed up on a massive scale. Bonuses are part of contracts so perfectly legit whether u like it or not i'm afraid.

You're clutching at the wrong straws

applying large boots to rears would be a much better idea as clutching at straws, is this how the leaders of the country are leading us to behave n then prosecuting us for doin what they do ?

I Agree Blackfish landings is wrong so is throwing undersize fish back into sea . They are dead when they are squashed up in the net so why not give them free of charge to local hospitals or some other deserving cause . Has anyone ever noticed the increasing amount of crabs / lobsters that are cought in creels with one or more claws missing ? They are mostly undersized and the greedy fisherman takes the claws home to eat leaving the shellfish with no crusher claw to crack its food or defend itself !!!!!!

Well, I don't know anything about the crabs, but I do believe that the greatest crime of all is the dumping of good fish back into the sea, dead of course. And that's not necessarily the fault of the fishermen, it's the fault of a crazy EU Fisheries Policy that doesn't really work, and doesn't provide conservation of the fish stocks, especially when good fish are being dumped.

what you have to realise is that blackfish landings, especially in the whitefish sector is a thing of the past and the industry is all the better for it, the pelagic sector was landing "black fish" by thousands of tons and nothing was being done about it until after 9/11 when goverments started tracking big sums of money, i remeber on a regular bases the whitefish skippers being prosecuted with maybe fines up to £10,000 for log book offences and yet pelagic skippers were getting fines of £1000 and the quanties of fish were huge compared with the whitefish landings.

this is all down to stupid eu laws, and quotas are set every year to scientific advice that are a couple of years out of date and this means fishermen are forced to dump prime fish.
