icepick239
Okay, it's reared its head again and with just a few months until the Local Elections..Question 1 - Who owns the land (on each Side) that will be required and crucial for the Tunnel approaches.Question 2 - When was the land acquired... IMHO the only place for a Tunnel, is exactly where the Ferry runs at present.Any other position would be an uneconomic disaster....
Twerto
Harbour trust lerwick side donkey years ago.. no idea about bressay.. a tunnel at the the current position of the ferry is pretty much an engineering impossibility without huge cost being thrown at it and the entrance being somewhere about king harald street play parks

smeghead
What you wanna do is take one o the yell sound ferries down, and park it between the catch and bressay, then you have a portable fixed link. Simply move the ferry when harbour traffic needs through. The SIC would save millions!!
stigli
Fairly straight forwardSwing bridge from the North Ness to the Loofa Baa and a fixed bridge from there Just requires operation from the port control office (cameras in place already)
icepick239
Sorry, but I am talking Tunnel here only.I still would like to know who owns the Land, that would need to be purchased in the event that a Tunnel were to become a reality. exciseman
Sorry, but I am talking Tunnel here only.I still would like to know who owns the Land, that would need to be purchased in the event that a Tunnel were to become a reality. LPA already own the land and already have the tunnel plans they got from the consultants they employed to provide an alternative for the SIC Bressay bridge (which was possibly to be named the Sandy Cluness Harbour Bridge).http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2008/10/31/bressay-tunnel-in-three-years-say-engineers-behind-projectThe tunnel approaches and entrances were to be cut through Gremista and Heogan. paulb
i think icepick is suggesting that the land maybe owened by well kmnown idividuals. why bressay first yell is the most logical to link up first.

veng
. why bressay first yell is the most logical to link up first. Yes indeed why Bressay first ????...Some things never change with the Shetland islands council... They want to do away with the most economical ferry first the Bressay ferry is one of the most economical ferries the SIC have and it must rake in a few £££ in the course of a year...Would it not be a better idea to give Yell the first fixed link first and get rid of the two gas guzzlers they have on Yell sound first..?And they could even make savings if they tied up the 'Linga' at night and ran the 'Hendra' which would burn a lot less fuel why do they need a big ferry at night its not as if it can carry any more passengers...!!!! engineer21
does the SIC not have a housing agenda on bressay? or mabye someone that owns alot of land there has some influence within the council...... then again mabye im just cynical
scooper
mabye someone that owns alot of land there has some influence within the council...... then again mabye im just cynical Yes you might just have hit the nail bang on the head there engineer21..And funnily enough that influence just by chance has land at the north end off Bressay just in the area where the Bressay end of the tunnel is to be.. Ghostrider
So, who are the current LPA Trustees? A visit to their website seems to suggest Harry Jamieson and Brian Anderson are Chairman and Vice-Chairman, but who's who, is not quite so clear from the undated bulletins. Ronnie Gair gets a mention as one too....but surely there are more than three..... Toll tunnel Steamer's Pier stylee anyone. What is the LPA's total shareholding in Heogan anyway, seeing as they owned the gut factory piers 100% before anyway, then they and Catch, which they owned a chunk of anyway, bought a 50% share in the factory itself. Does the LPA have any shareholding in Shetland Seafood and the SFPO who bought the other 50% of the factory.....Tangled webs, and we're still no oot o' da Heogan ebb yit.
