i really hope so.

lets not forget that we do have a private care home in shetland. the walter and joan care home. they pay slightly less than the council but are equally as good.

however £770 per week is ouch. my father in law was in a nursing home a good one and that was 400 a week.

Slightly less?

I might be wrong but, I have been told that the 'slightly less'(?) pay at the W & J G Eventide home is around £9 per hour whilst the SIC seems to be paying just over £14..

Anyone care to correct me?

Yup, I'll correct you. The Wife works for the SIC and gets just under £10 per hour and she deserves every penny of it. I don't think I need to go into detail but I wouldn't do what she does for any amount of money. My Mother is in a care home south at about £600 per week. I'd pay any amount of money to have her here with me.

Apart from anything else, when did the goalposts move on social care from the NHS to the SIC, and did the council funding grant from government increase proportionately to accurate reflect the change.

35 or so years ago the NHS had the Brevik, OGB and Montfield, all full to capacity with waiting lists for the infirm elderly and the SIC had Viewforth and Leog which was replaced by Kantersted.

Now the SIC have ET House and Taing House and numerous Care Centres up and down the isles and god knows what else, and the NHS has the top floor of the hospital. That's a big swing in whose responsible for and paying for whom, did our Councillors of whatever day(s) these shifts occured seek and fight for extra governmental funding to match their increasing obligations, or was it like everything else, "the government irna offering, so we'll just dip in wir kitty and pey it wirsells".

i used to work in a geriatric hospital in stockport. that was not what you would have wished on anyone. the care was good but it was very depressing.

the nhs has never been responsible for providing social care. in the past they were used as a last resort care provider hence montfield. however with the changes in policies from the 1980s onwards the ideal care should be provided in the home followed by the community and lastly hospital.

the new moves at the moment are to combine the services of nhs community services with those of the council. so it should be one organization providing all the care.

planning wise they have dropped a big clanger. they closed too many care of the elderly beds. hoping that the council would cover the short fall in the community. this is not going to happen.

so either we are going to continue to send our difficult to care for patients south which is against Scottish governments policy. or we need an expanded care of the elderly service. realisticly we need 2 wards one for medically unwell/ rehab and the other a dementia unit. ward 3 takes most of the dementia patients that need medical care it really is not suited for the purpose.

onto pay the wife is near the top end of the pay bands for a band 5 nurse yet she could earn about the same for a lot less responsibly as a senior care worker. comparing a health care worker and an auxiliary nurses pay is were there is a big difference.

as riskassessed say they deserve every penny. its not an easy job.

In the midst of all the huge cutbacks in the care centers , community skips disappearing , country school closures etc etc.......Isnt it heartwarming to see a £1 million extension being added to the Edward Thomason house....in , naturally enough...Lerwick. A nice addition to compliment the mareel , upgrades to clickimin , new school etc , all in Lerwick.

Is it any wonder people from the country think they are gettin the s**t end o the stick.

it was originally intended to accommodate the viewforth residents. this is now in debate as they have found out they need the specialised care. however viewforth is not fit for purpose.

no top secrets being given out its been talked about in the care sector for years.
