unlinkedstudent
... Shouting at your child, will only lead to mental abuse, and this will live in your child throughout their childhood, and even going on to adult hood, ruining future relationships, as well as future parenting techniques. The impact is too huge to explain, and for many - who really cares? ... Look around and look at the numbers of children who are damaged, through parents or their peers, shouting, arguing because they cant agree on how best to discipline, and what's the outcome - misery from what I have seen. ... IMHO and also that of many statisticians, your arguments are flawed. You have referred to the number of years you have worked with vulnerable people. Is it not a reasonable assumption to reach that you only see people so affected by what you deem to be abuse who are in the "system"? Likewise, much research is based on studies. Now whether these are quantitive or qualitative I know not, but what I do know, along with others having had the pleasure to participate in academia, is that the results of research are skewed. UNLESS researchers interviewed every single person in say a set area then you are never going to get definitive results. I've never participated in research pertaining to my age group/geographical location relating to abuse so my voice was never heard/counted. Indeed, most research is conducted and draws as its subjects those souls already in "the system"; people like me who don't believe they are scarred aren't usually included in the research. Therefore, how can you say that shouting (and indeed smacking a child) leads to mental abuse, problems in future relationships, etc.? Have you met people like me who have suffered abuse during their childhood who aren't in "the system" and don't need counselling/support/whatever? paulb
unlink you don't have to mark or cause injury the clip around the ear is enough for sherlock and his mates to arrest you. the question was was it ok to smack the answear is no its not. it usually means the smackie has won the face off. having a croft find a jo that is smlly is quite a good deterant to bad behaviour. scoots
Absolutely. As for all those who go on about shouting at your child, etc, damaging them & perpetuating a cycle of behaviour? In my opinion that's b######t!! Explain to me then the likes of David Peltzer, or those like him, who suffered the most horrendous physical and sexual abuse as bairns, but who lead ordinary, if not exemplary lives??! (Not that I advocate screaming and bawling at your bairn all the time!!) It's an EXCUSE. For folk to behave badly, or why they behave badly when they're pulled up about it, or caught doing something wrong or against the law. "Oh I had a bad childhood, it's not my fault!" Crap. Pure and simple. We ALL decide what kind of lives we will lead as we develop into and become adults. If your parent is alcoholic it doesn't mean you have to be, nor is it an acceptable excuse if you do. I don't care what "studies" say. There'll be another along in a minute to disagree with the last one anyway!! It's a matter of CHOICE and FREE WILL. End of (sorry, I usually hate that phrase, but it applies here, I believe). paulb
its a summary offence if admitted or found guilty there is no defence. if your arrested your going to be in front of the sheriff. unless its changed your not offered a lawyer. scoots
Not necessarily, paulb. Between the polis and the court is the procurator fiscal. It's his/her job to decide of something is in the public interest to bring to court, no matter what you're arrested for. If they decide it's best dealt with by Social Work, for instance, then that's what will happen. Or a warning. Or just a case of parents chastising the wayward bairn. Depends on the circumstances in each case. It's NOT a given, by any means. And I don't know who gives you your info, but it's been pretty widely publicised that we MUST ALL be given legal representation, or access to one. This relatively recent decision (1 year +) by the European Court had led to dozens of appeals (many from murderers and their ilk, convicted before the decision was made!). Para Handy
Some say a kid is like a young dog it wont bite you again if you give it a crack over the nose with a newspaper, Well I have never seen a dog sitting on a Naughty Step for very long bite or no bite. piggywiggie
i got a smack when I was younger if i did something terrible. i respect my parents. i appreciate how they brought me up. i think it all depends on how you communicate and how your child communicates with you. some parents may pick to give a child a wee smack some may not. it all depends on the effect it has with the child. everyone responds differently to things. what works one time might not work another

Breathes a sigh of relief that nobody ever found the old Polaroids of self with son and the unspeakable peashooter, let alone the Super Soaker Water Gun. Sugar, I just mentioned them.
