The city council have spent a fair bit of cash on the availability of our city spaces and have invited all, it sees to have worked. Can we have a thread where shetlandpeat and sheepshagger just get to flame each other which would let everyone else have a discussion without one of them posting and the other coming along half an hour later completely disagreeing with them, would think they were married or something Back to topic, in Aberdeen the playparks regularly get occupied by kids in their later teens and to be honest a swat team probably would think twice about asking them to move out of the way of kids but the kids in aberdeen are smoking and drinking and make no effort to hide it, the kids in Lerwick from what the OP is saying aren't displaying that kind of behaviour. Kids even in their adolescence need something to do and while a kiddies playpark is not ideal it's better that than them being sat playing the x-box all day. Billy/T22 Posted December 15, 2009 Report Share Posted December 15, 2009 Hello, i am sick of going into lerwick on the saturday and the viiking bus station is mobbed by the teenagers of lerwick and other places...i come into lerwick to have a nice day out and as i go and put ma shopping in the viking in the lockers then there is always a hundred and one teenagers standing there!! some people might find it threating and some people might not !!do u not think that they should be removed??? they could at least go and find somewhere else to go and speak but a place where elderly and woman with babies and push chairs are then they shoud not be standing there!!! please tell me ur views thanks (***Mod Edit - Merged with similar thread and title changed to Teenagers in Shetland***) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They have as much right to be there as anyone else - I can't see how an elderly person or a mother with a buggy has more right to the space. Saturday is traditionally a day where teenagers want to go to town and hang out - they are at school every other day the shops are open. Elderly people or mums with buggies usually have every other day of the week that they can go into town if they do feel intimidated by them. I can understand how people might feel intimidated by groups off teens, but I have never come across a group of teens in town in lerwick being deliberately intimidating to others. They are not only there all day on a Saturday, but every day after school! Many of them seem to be troublemakers and stand under the canopy reeking others out with their underage smoking, and they seem to take no notice of the fact that the bus station is a public place where smoking is banned/restricted. They are also constantly swearing, shouting and spitting as 'hoosn' said! The majority of teenagers do not behave like this, and is the few who behave like those at the viking that give the elderly a negative view of teenagers. Which to be honest are the 3main reasons they're there.When it comes to the westside quite often catching the bus at the viking is the only way you can guarantee a seat on the 5pm buses, and with the school bus being too short on seats to carry all the pupils the 5pm is often more comfortable.If you're really that concerned com ed up at islesburgh seem to have been having meetings in town, during school hours (I can only assume for the complainers) you can always contact them with solutions for your concerns. I mean, it can feel a little intimidating when there's a big group of them hanging around, but generally speaking you aren't going to get abuse or worse hurled at you.
