hoosn
they will have moved on to another spot to "hang out" , as far as i can mind its what teenagers do. Yes most of the facilities are likely to be a big drain on pocket money and they wont be able to afford too many visits. However , nobody will have moved them on without a reason and am sure they will survive
Frances144
Out of interest, how much does it cost to use the facilities at the Isleburgh, ie to pay snooker, etc? Do you have to be a member or can anyone just go in and use the facilities?
JohanofNess
What sports initiatives are there on the isles nowadays, find a lot of children would be happy enough playing football or other sports if they didn't have to pay for them. When I was a youngster (not that long ago before you ask) we played football everynight in the summer and in the winter played badminton and indoor football, we didn't have to pay for these though. JAStewart
When I was young I didn't hang around the bus station actually. We used to skateboard. But everyone hated that too.
Guest Anonymous
my teenage bairns seem to have certain places where them n thier pals all meet up before moving on to what they fancy , or just spend time there with thier pals, very similar to what everybody says they did ,and myself at that age too. Seems logical that they would all meet up at the bus station initially. I've not been aware that these in question have been causing any real bother as such, or have they ? Theres plenty laid on for them if they choose to use it, and plenty to learn n see too
piggywiggie
yeah my wee bro uses the station as a meeting place. they are usually there for a wee while though as everyones bus gets in a different time! haha!
jimmy parks
Teenagers have always hung around, but it does seem they hang around even more nowadays. Seems the more there is to do the more they hang around. But as long as theyre bothering nobody surely there isnt a problem.
Ghostrider
Rowdy youngsters to be banned from Lerwick bus station for intimidating behaviour Yup, I can really see a ban making a huge lot of difference to any "alleged" problem. I think Cecil Smith is the only one to have made a sensible comment..... Councillor Cecil Smith was far from convinced anybody would pay attention to an order signed by him, as chairman of the licensing sub-committee. xoni
was speaking to one of the ladies that runs a youth scheme up here the other week and she had just come back from a trip down to Liverpool, what we see up here is really nothing in comparrison! The major issue here is lack of facilities, the children are encouraged to grow up pretty fast in Shetland with a percentage of the population being introduced to drink at a young age but then they are told they cant do that as its illegal and have to go and play air hockey instead lol...which just dosnt cut it for them. You see you cant turn back the hands of time once innocence is lost its lost forever so we are left with a lot of apprentice adults with nowhere to go and not the fully developed brain capacity to make the best decisons for themselves. You cant have it both ways folks , either dont allow them into town and refuse to give them drink or money for it and treat them as their real age ...or put up with the consequenses. I think a lot of parents feel pressured when it comes to their 14/15/16 yr olds because so many of them have friends that are all 'alllowed' to do these things and by saying no you then isolate them from their peers. I think better communication between the parents is whats called for.
Caitch87
Right, I'm a teenager, 18 as of yesterday infact, and im actually one of the very few people in the whole island who doesnt drink at all! i mean, not a drop! It's just who i am and dont wanna change for no reason! But even i can admit that Shetlands youths have a horrible drink problem, and this is from the sober kid in the halls...But the with the bus station situtation, its a bloody joke! As it was my birthday yesterday, me and my friends camped out for fun, and this morning, some of us were sitting in the viking talking waiting for the rest to come and leave their bags, and one of the guys came out and started shouting at us to get out if we're not catching a bus, and it was just raining. I dont see how this is fair, seeing as they shout at us for sitting inside, and now if we sit outside we'll get soaked, or now have a metal bar up our asses! Most of people who are in Lerwick will have seen our group, we do parkour/free running, (the jumping and vaulting and flipping) and yes, we look like we're really rough and causing trouble i know, but honestly, right now, i can quite happily say that we are some of the nicest teens you will meet in a group in lerwick! We'll say sorry if we get in the way, we'll move on if we get asked to, and even on occasions help when we can! Even yesterday, me and a friend found a 12 year old on the wall across from tesco trying to drag himself to the hospital because his knee had dislocated! Everyone else had just been walking past him, which just isnt right, so we sat with him and called an ambulance for him and made sure he was ok!My point there is that we may look rough, but just dont judge a book by its cover please! and thats for everyone, not just teens! As someone who used to hang around town a lot (left for uni now) and is also teetotal, I can completely agree with this. It's crazy that when people find something genuinely fulfilling to do with their time, it can be infringed upon because others of the same demographic aren't angels.
