Well the South Africans seem to think that football can be used to teach values. It has been given cash by the rest of the world to do so. But, each to their own. When I was young and on the Thule, the hill was the place to hang out or the piers. The hill was safer for a drink or a smoke. Then folk got their own places and it wasn't the same.

understandable yes... but now its not the only sport that does so... my sport is one in which you get relaxed afterwards, helps get rid of stress and such, but yet people drive by shouting abuse out the cars such as 'fall!' so i quite happily shout back 'crash!' This isnt outta spite, just pretty sick of so many people dissing what i enjoy, and seeming to think that football is the only sport that matters...

and im not argueing against anyone in particular here, just expressing my views, and im not saying noone should play football, just that it shouldnt be taking over the world, and the tv when not as many people as they think actually care for it...

Sadly, as long as the supporters are willing to pay extra ordinary prices to follow a big team the profits and the millionairs will be created. Sadly, again, most sport is going this way.

Start up archery...or relax and trance out with a didge, I'm learning, if you get it right it tickles the inner ear.

tried archery just wasnt quick enough for me... and didge as in didgerydoo (if thats how you spell it which i dont think so... ) cause my friend tried to teach me but couldnt get it so i'll stick to my parkour and climbing its free and fun and makes you feel good after the adreniline

Football schemes work in large urban areas because football is the most popular participation sport in the world, it makes sense that the majority of money paid out to sporting facilities is paid to the sport the majority play. Shetland isn't a large urban area but football is still the most popular sport on the island in terms of participation.

^^ I'm not knocking football for those who are in to it, whatever pulls folk's chains and all that, For some of us running around an acre of grass after a blown up balloon, for no other reason than bunging it in the back of a net went right over heads. You felt a total numpty when you tried it, it all seemed so absolutely pointless, and you felt a bigger numpty watching other folk doing it. The concept of why it should matter who "won" the "game" was totally lost on some of us.

 

Just hanging around, having a smoke, chewing the fat, checking out the passing women, trying (and 99.9% of the time failing) to chat up any one who took you eye, seeing folk going about their business etc, was far more interesting. It was far more of a "life" education than some invented play IMHO.

 

Some of the things I learned while propping up sundry street doorways and windows:

 

1) Make sure the parking brake is on an artic trailer before trying to shunt it onboard the tractor unit fifth wheel. They bounce back pretty good if not, and end up in some unfortunate places.

 

2) If you're going to try and outrun the Mk III Cortina Jam Sandwich along the Esplanade on your motorbike, make sure you can stay on your motorbike.

 

3) Don't be the one standing next the draw bucket somebody fishing for sillocks from the pier had "borrowed" off the 'Heatherbelle', when the crew come back. Regardless that you had nothing to do with bucket or sillocks, you are going to be the one they cuss out.

A- Doesnt mean the council should spend all its money on it then try to get out of building a cinema which is LONG over due...

 

B- Doesnt mean that those who play football have the right to diss every other sport automatically... i mean, they've never tried it, so they dont know, i've tried football and i dont like it, doesnt mean its bad, just means that i've tried it and not my cup of tea...

The cinema issue is pretty simple a council in almost any other part of the country wouldn't be building a cinema a company would to make money, the fact the council is doing it makes me think any company in the entertainment game were less than confident in making a profit on Shetland with a cinema. At the very least a football pitch is getting used umpteen months of the year to keep people fit and healthy, true it doesn't turn a profit but then what parks and gardens provided by a local authority do.

why is it always, kids need facilities for this and for that and we need to be providing this and that to keep them off the streets.

pastimes and hobbies are only there for when you have nothing better to do, try the real world kids, the sooner the better.

 

educate yourselves, be better than your peers, get a job and some coin, capitalism and consumerism is fantastic if you dont settle for mediocrity.

Well I certainly think it's odd that there's no skate/bike park happening for the kids, see plenty practising trials and tricks on the street (where I'm sure grumpy old sods moan), but may be those would rather stay on the street. Parcour is cool and free, you even get a free trip to A&E if you need it we used tosimialr stuff playing tig around old dissused mine buildings, and get chased, part of the fun

 

I never was a fan of any team games , especially footy. My thing was climbing, martial arts and bushcraft. We did hang out in the local play park messing about but if we had some where like the bus station we might have been there.

 

Doesn't seem to be a shortage of money for fags, booze, chips, mobiles and the rest (with kids)so it's not as if they couldn't be spent on some of the clubs and acxtivities that are on offer if they wanted to.

 

Kids are kids finding their boundaries and pushing ours. People tolerance for them is just reduced to zero in some, theyget all angry just at the sight of them 'hanging out'...

I think the teenagers in Shetland are brilliant, I generally feel reassured that they are tomorrows adults. I see children in my job and generally find that they are polite and thoughtful particularly here in Shetland.

I think it would be more worrying not to see them in public places.
