The private dental practice upstairs in the Toll Clock is good -- he has restored my faith in dentists! Don't even feel the injections really -- honest!

look at his website -- prices and everything

Lucky you. I know someone who enquired about teeth whitening. Was told over the phone that it's no problem, about £250.00 in total.

When they made their appointment they were told that due to their fillings the cost would be in excess of £5000.00. There was a cheaper option available which wouldn't be as good, or as permanent which would be £130.00 per tooth (veneers on about 10 to 12 teeth).

Appointment over in under 10 minutes, that'll be £50.00 and thank you sir.

Subsequent appointment cancelled next day. I know the person felt completely ripped off and will never return.

how about a dentist staring what would be expensive dental treatment for you just when you were beginning high school and then not giving you appointments or contacting you (ater pulling out loads of teeth and you trying to contact them). when they finally do get their finger out their backside half way through treatment and start charging you a fortune for it even though you were told it would still be free as it was their fault for not contacting you?

How was it so hard to contact the dentist? Did they never answer the phone? Did your parent/guardian go into the dental surgery and speak to the receptionist?

Why not make the next appointment before leaving the dental surgery?

The onus was on your parent/guardian to ensure you completed your treatment - given that you were 11 or 12 when treatment started. You only have to pay for treatment when you are 18 so do we assume you took 6 years to go back to finish your treatment?

Did you never have a dental check up during all that time?

Stop blaming the dentist for your failure to go back and have the work finished.

I am 58 years old. I have payed my national insurance stamp since I was 15. I have been on the waiting list for the Montfield dentist for 6 years, but private is not an option. Its a matter of principle.

I was at a NHS meeting today (at Brevik House) at which it was said, in a presentation, that the waiting list is currently 4.5 years. I would thus enquire back at the Montfield what is happening in your particular case. I am some way behind you on the list and am paying privately so would appreciate moving up the list fairly quickly soon.

Your friend is not the only one who had an unpleasant experience in the Bolts Dental Clinic.

When my aunt went there she had a lot of pressure put on her when she said she wasn't sure about the treatment selected for her and wanted to go for a second opinion.

After that she saw two NHS dentists and was referred to a specialist at a hospital in Aberdeen. All three told her that some of the treatment planned for her by the dentist in Bolts wasn't necessary, and some of it was the worst treatment imaginable in her case.

I'm sure they also do some good work, but when it comes to major things I'd be careful.

NHS dentists are paid a salary and don't gain financially from the treatment they provide for their patients as far as I know - it's quite a different matter in the private sector.

I had a look at the link and find there's too much stuff about perfect looking teeth - i'd rather have imperfect but healthy teeth than a mouth full of crowns and veneers.

Haa. See these things dooooo happen.

I remember off on a tangent now re: opticians in Shetland in the late 90's - Molers we'll call them for the sake of a story. Where could that be.. me dunno?!? Went in for a check-up on me 'een' and had the full monty and was told that I required glasses - that was it! I came back to pick them up and when I put them on ---- desk was concave as was the steamers pier with the Antares sitting there quite the thing - I was told to look into the distance -- ".. could I focus? ..." ...Eh? No!!!!

"Hmm - you'll grow into them", I was told. "NO - you keep these glasses I replied". After much hassle of "You HAVE to pay for them", I left the shop with a large 'bird' motion!....... "F'you!!"...

.... I have quite a sound optician now in Edinburgh that every year tells me my 'een' are quite the thing - I just have to stop staring into a computer screen 24x7 and my eyes will adust properly! As they do quite the thing themselves!!! I stare into a pen and pull it forward and hang it back to make my eye muscles stronger!.... would I have ever been told that in Shetland .. I question!! My eyes are top .. no glasses and no money spent! Find that in Shetland ... I question!?!?

Where am I going with this .... questions .... questions .. questions ...ensure you are getting the deal you are being dealt!!

Frustrated at being on the waiting list jere, we joined Tesco dental insurance. W had to wait a year to make a reasonable-sized claim (over £500). We didn't make one and, when the year was up and I needed a crown or two, we got the renewal policy to see, not only that the premium had shot up, but that the amoiunts we could claim were halved. We were pee'd off and immediately cancelled but had totally wasted about £480 a year in monthly premiums covering the two of us.

Being on the waiting list here, you either pay privately or simply don't go. We could, I guess, put the £40 into a separate account pending treatment bills but that doesn't go far in terms of private bills. Being retired, it is really frustrating waiting to go up the list.

I was tempted to post this to The WTF News thread, but it does of course really belong here. Absolutely incredible:

Dental service 'not good enough'

The Liberal Democrats have claimed Scots are being penalised by poor provision of dental services across the country.

The number of dentists varies widely per region, with Orkney and Shetland the best served areas and Grampian and Dumfries and Galloway the worst.

Given the fact that Shetland has such a non-service, what does this say for the rest of Scotland? Or is there a different reason why the waiting lists are so ridiculously long here?
