Gollywogs - is this guy for real?.

So, a Gollywog doll is, we are supposed to believe, on sight, "racist" and/or "offensive" regardless that there is no evidence of a racist component to its existence in the case in hand, or that many had no knowledge of its alleged "racist" connotations.

 

Yet, apparently the use of the moniker "KKK" isn't allegedly "racist", and is totally acceptable. Hmmm.... :ponders:

I would say it was definitely ill-judged. Either "KKK" aren't bothered by the association with the Ku Klux Klan, or they're too dim to have made the connection. Neither option reflects terribly well on them.

^ I'd tend to see it as having broader implications than that. It would appear neither the backers nor publicisers of the award scheme in question have any issues with it, nor for that matter apparently does the local paper. Which given their coverage quite recently of Mr. Sissay's rhetoric on a very closely related subject, comes over as at best surprising and inconsistent, some might even say hypocritical.
