molex13
Does it exist up here, and if so who do I contact?
dsaintf
It did once upon a time with the women entering a team into the sevens tournament against other female opposition (either 2005 or 2006). Since then there has been very little despite the occasional interest. The best thing to do would be to drum up interest through facebook or the shetlandrugby.com website. With the adults rugby at an all time high, Juniors expanding rapidly and school kids now being taught it in school through the new development officer for Shetland, women's rugby really is sadly the last gem in the crown. http://www.shetlandrugby.com/https://www.facebook.com/groups/45780963595/

MJ
got a teenager who'd be interested, problem is when they start secondary they can't play with the boys.
dsaintf
I've just finished taking the primary school rugby kids for training this very hour and noticed there were 6 secondary school girls taking part in the intermittent age group (S1-4 pupils). For the likes of tackling the girls that attend are given special rules so as they aren't on the receiving end from the boys that attend. It would be useful contacting Shetland Regional Rugby coordinator Daniel Meadows for more information on the training but what is given- All are welcome, regardless of age, experience, skill, size or gender. Junior training is at the Clickimin rugby pitch and starts at 10am every Saturday morning. You can come along to chat with one the coaches on the day if you have any concerns over your child taking part. The game of rugby at all levels stresses that safety is paramount, with Junior rugby being specifically for developing the skills required to go on and safely play the game but also to have a lot of fun! MJ
She did, she was the only girl in the minis. If there are girls, she's definitely be interested in going back. It got awkward as she got older regarding the tackling and she felt sorry for the much smaller boys not knowing where to put their hands. dsaintf
Aww, what a shame. I'll have a word with Daniel on Saturday at training and see what he plans on doing for promoting the game to the girls again
peeriememe
I used to play with the women's team back in 2005/6, we had a brilliant time, playing against Orkney, Bergen and as someone said the rugby sevens. Mike Skinner was our coach (along with a few helpful others). Daniel Meadow's is definately the person to contact, if people (women/girls) are interested let him know. If there is enough girls then they might start training again. I now do pitch side physio for the guys so would be happy to help out but sadly no longer play due to shoulder injury.
