Colin
Didn't bother reading the link but, the UK Gov and the energy industry have ripped us of and used our oil for decades. Now they want to cover us with windmills....

shetlandpeat
The UK energy market is an issue of particular concern here in Shetland and has been full of claims and counter claims and myths from both sides. The link below is to an independent assessment in the ecologist of the state of play. http://www.theecologist.org/News/news_analysis/2434503/government_hostility_to_renewables_and_scottish_independence_may_put_the_lights_out.html This still does not reference the numbers, we are told they are such, but no evidence of how they came about. Where do these figures come from. Without being able to see these, how are we then to take this as the gospel?
MuckleJoannie
Here is an article from the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-24614126 Coal has been keeping the lights on.Although it may seem like it has had its hey-day, today it is still producing the biggest percentage of the electricity that we use, about 40%.It is cheaper than gas and more flexible than renewables but with a number of our aging coal fired power stations shutting or reaching the end of their lives, supply is reaching a crunch point. So could and should the government be giving serious consideration to extending the life of some of these plants in order to deal with the spectre of blackouts?Ian Fells, emeritus professor of energy conversion at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, said: "This government and previous governments have all been told that we were going to run into this sort of situation by 2014/2015 as various power stations, old power stations, 40-year-old stations closed down for various reasons."But they're not being replaced and the governments have sat on their hands and have not done anything about it and now surprise, surprise they're worried about it all." Who Knows
The evidence to the statements and the source data is in the links built in to the article which is the underlined words in the ecologist or in the original version the bold words. http://theconversation.com/the-coalitions-attitude-to-renewables-and-scotland-is-a-risk-to-national-security-27666 Yes, Scotland will eventually become an independent member of the Commonwealth following a yes vote. Although not all members of the commonwealth were actually part of the British Empire, those that were that have been granted their right for self determination have not put at risk their membership of the club when exercising that choice to take full control of their own affairs. Whether yes or no is the outcome of the referendum there will be a Team Scotland competing at the XXI Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia in 2018. Rasmie
I would think that at the first election, the SNP will be out and it will be Prime Minister Lamont, with some form of socialist/labour look alike party taking power forever. So that means back to precription charges and university fees etc.
Colin
http://www.shetnews.co.uk/newsbites/9028-referenda-petition Another good reason to vote NO... Seems to me that it is OK for Scotland to part company with the UK but, Island Groups do not get the same consideration... I wonder why? Wouldn't it be a good idea if the local authorities concerned had the balls to hold a referendum anyway? Just might encourage Holyrood to be a little more even handed. Kavi Ugl
The "proposal" that has been published is frankly an insult and shows that the OIOF campaing has been a complete waste of time, money and effort. But then again I expected nothing less and like him or loathe him Stuart Hill was 100% right when he stated a few months ago that they were being strung along with fancy sounding meetings and hollow promises. I also saw a post on the Yes Shetland Facebook page last week which said that in the event of a Yes vote they need to dump Lamont/Labour and form a new re-invigerated Socialist Party. Sadly, that's huge part of what it's all about. It'll be a socialist state with a massive social welfare system(funded by the oil) and with all control centralised. It's like going back to the dark ages... Another comment I saw on the Yes Shetland page, and which was posted by the Administrators of the page no less, was "we're not fighting for Shetland, we're fighting for Scotland". And you want me to support you and vote YES??. And don't even think about disagreeing with them. More than one has and found that they were instantly pounded and thrown out the door.
