MJ
So whit's wi aa the negative posts about the wadder, when was the last time any of us were flooded out of our homes ? Well there was this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/3122650.stm Wasn't here for that one, flooded homes tend to be isolated, but it's not unknown, sure we don't have the rivers for large scale floods, but it's not unknown, historically the houses at Channerwick had problems. stilldellin
^ I was there, stuck on the north side of the avalanche but canna recall any houses in Shandrick being flooded, I think the Wirlie at Sandwick was probably most affected.

hjasga
I wonder weather the OP is under the wrong impression that Shetland does not suffer from the same "problems" as the rest of the UK.We have our druggies, scroungers, immigrants looking for an easy life (mainly British, but some from eastern Europe and far flung places) I'm aware you probably didn't mean this as I'm reading it, but the slightly unsavoury way immigrants are being spoken about in this thread grates with me a bit. All the immigrant workers I've known in Shetland work as hard as anybody else and certainly aren't here for "an easy life".
shetlandpeat
Some may also be refugees. We have had all this on another thread.Let us not get this one locked!
MJ
I think you miss my meaning, an easy life is different for many people, for some it means not living hand to mouth, to others not having to worry about "disappearing", for others unfortunately it does mean living of DSS.Immigrant in the way they are being discussed in this thread are those who are moving to Shetland from outside.Previously when living and working south, I found myself working in sectors where very few of my colleagues were originally from the area, not many would work 16hr shifts or start at 4am or finish at 3am. I am not suggesting that folk move to the UK to live off benefits, that is unfortunately a symptom of the asylum legislation and EU regulations.I would question people who move up, take up a residence off the main transport routes, with no means of their own transportation, away from any employment opportunities, with no means to support themselves, expecting the state to subsidise them. Piddly
Some of the gash written on this thread regarding immigrants is pathetic. Yes there are some bad apples amongst them but in my experience and what i hear from others is that the eastern europeans who have graced our Island over the past few years are hard working, pleasant folk. We have 2 families living next to my work and you couldn't meet more pleasant folk. Now, you look at Crofter's post and that tells its own story. The people who really get on my t*ts are the local layabouts/junkies and the UK migrants/junkies who come of the boat, get a house and go straight on the dole. Give me the Polish any day of the week. LOL after reading crofters post above. I can't believe anyone would write something like this without checking some facts - you're not a journalist by any chance are you? Ironwithin
At least 2 out of the 41 folk, but thats a very low week, so atleast around 5%, even that seems a high percentage for the number that must be here? Keep on looking each week as its normally higher. I agree a lot of them are hard workers but some are bad apples as well. But the worst seem to be from the sooth mooth UK. Wonder how many on that list came here that way? I can see a few names that stick out.
