Njugle
Some people forget that we had Biffy freakin' Clyro playing at Burra one fine evening... Scalloway may have been the starting point, shame its a dump. Going back a wee bit more, i think i woould have to say that Mossbank, Brae, Voe and definitely Vidlin Halls were the start and mainstays of many a fine band a few years back. Good times indeed.(plus Scalloway is less of a dump than Lerrick)
JustMe
Maybe this would work for some halls......a bar in a separate room with no under 18s allowed in to the bar and no drink to be taken out of the bar. A bit of work for the stewards. Might even convince people that they can have a good time without constant drinking. A good idea that we tried on a couple of occasions. Unfortunately, it didn't work. It required extra stewards and led to a lot of confrontation. Yes Colin, I did think about the confrontation when I mentioned my idea but since the alternatives are "dry" gigs or over 18 gigs I do wonder if the effort might be worthwhile. As a sub issue has the smoking ban thrown up any problems at the halls so far?. Certainly I believe that the next time I am in a hall some of the people there (at a private function) will want to smoke somewhere.

Colin
As a sub issue has the smoking ban thrown up any problems at the halls so far?. Certainly I believe that the next time I am in a hall some of the people there (at a private function) will want to smoke somewhere. The smoking ban is a nightmare. We had a policy that once somebody was in the hall they were not allowed out unless they were leaving. This was good because it meant that the under 18's could not get to their carry out's etc. It also meant that we coud operate with only 2 door stewards. Because of the ban we have to let people out if they want to smoke and this has forced us to increase the number of door stewards. We had 250 people at the last gig and even the non-smokers wanted outside with their friends. It was almost impossible to control as there was a large crowd in the main lobby at all times. In short, it has caused huge problems and cured none.
ChristopherWilliamThomson
I just wanted to add my two cents to this. I think the country hall events were instrumental in developing our rising talents in Shetland whether it was through playing of watching. Jack Sandison is one case in point (Jack, don't believe what Neil says...). He was very much a part of the hall scene for a few years in a band who were in retrospect not particularly good but has blossomed into a good songwriter and a good singer. Murray Arthur, drummer for the band I am in (diminor), played with a few bands namely Junk De Lux at hall events and pubs, and from an angst driven, ill disciplined method of drumming he has grown into the finest young drummer in Shetland and is already instrumental (no pun) in training and teaching the next generation through drumjam. The question is. Where are the next generation going to test their trade?
