Don't live in Shetland meself but wondering what you lads think about the council tax set up. Just had a look at the rates and it seems very steep (nearly 4% per year on the value of the house for some of them).

In Ireland we havn't had property tax since the 70's but the government is trying to bring it back in even though they said before the election that they wouldn't. I don't actually agree with the idea of having to pay the government every year for the privilege of owning your own house for many reasons.

Do you feel you are getting value for money out of them with the service they provide? Has anyone been made sell their house because they couldn't pay it anymore?

hi just wondering how do you pay for the services that council tax covers?is it quite a fair way?

here the tax cover schools.transport,libraries.rubbish collections(not sure about fire services)road maintenance care homes etc.

it might not be a great way of paying for these services but they have to be paid for some-how

Council tax usually covers local fire/police, Council Tax here isn't so bad, plus we still have quite high public services (at the moment). A large portion in Scotland is water rates.

Council Tax isn't based on owning your home, if you rent you still have to pay, if it's too much you can appeal. There's discounts for various reasons, plus there is help if you can't afford it.

When renting you just take council tax in to account when looking at a property, just like any other bill, so I assume you do when buying a home too, but then at least in my life time there's always been rates/community charge/council tax so never known anything different.

also the council tax is just that, a tax set by the council, they choose the rates (unless regional/national government is trying to buy votes) and it is used to pay for local/regional services over and above those paid for by income tax & business rates etc. through national/regional government.
