Well worth a mention is the Sumburgh Airport Memorial dedicated to all who lost their lives in four incidents related to the oil industry. http://www.sumburghairportmemorial.co.uk/

Progress is continuing with completion for end of May. Photo taken 28th April.

^ Good to see it coming along nicely, 30+ year ago would have been better, but better late than never.

Its not entirely what I was expecting it to look like from the artist's drawing, but I think it works well nonetheless.

Didna see it but heard the roar of the 748 engines as she went over the end of the runway. Will never forget it.

It's good to know there are at least more rescue services these days. Today, Bond Rescue G-REDO at the ready at Sumburgh :-

"Memorial Opening Ceremony

Saturday 25th May 2013 11:30 service all welcome."

I was working on the Safe Gothia hooked-up to Brent Charlie when the chopper went down on the Spar - we were out on deck greeting and praying, watching the fast rescue boats circling, standing by as stretcher-bearers.

I was also on Rockwater Regalia at Ekofisk in 1991 when a Bell helicopter doing maintenance hit a flare stack right opposite, crashed onto a walkway then fell into the sea - all 3 crew perished.

The difference in staff welfare and support in the Norwegian sector was tremendous - we were all given a free phone call home, could take the rest of the day off or even go home if we felt traumatised or upset.

The Company Director was on board the Regalia within hours, with a team of Psychologists & Counsellors, calling everyone on board to regular briefings to keep up fully informed as to what was happening.

I would like to go to the Opening Ceremony - is anyone planning to go that could give me a lift down from Sandwick? {With room in the boot for a wheelchair?}
