stilldellin
Cross-winds at Scatsta diverted a lot of air traffic to Sumburgh today. Catched this Saab 2000 while waiting at the lights this afternoon. Wheelsup
Lucky that Sumburgh, despite all the negativity in the nineties. managed to keep going, and continues to provide a reliable service
shetlandpeat
We always knew them as just "Another Technical Problem". The ATP was always an exciting ride, upon take off, having to wear some sort of head protection because of the parts of the cabin that used to fall on you or around. It was the backing up at the end of the runway before take off that often got passengers paying attention. Ghostrider
^.....and it was when the reverse thrust was kicked in that everybody on the ground within a mile of the damn things had no choice but pay attention, as long as their eardrums held out. gafynandrew
stilldellin
^ Doot aye be plenty traffic at Sumburgh, Scatsta is no good with the south-east gales and some of us can mind back how lang they can last. Good for the bus companies though wi all the ferrying to Scatsta to catch the choppers. Shows the importance and vulnerability of runway 09/27 at Sumburgh though. :- http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3718/12015222226_3e0dded371_c.jpgRunway 27 IMG_4265 by Ronnierob, on Flickrhttp://farm4.staticflickr.com/3697/12014833063_28e56c95f5_c.jpgOPS 3 & Runway 27 IMG_4319 by Ronnierob, on Flickrhttp://farm4.staticflickr.com/3717/12014976874_674240de89_c.jpgRunway 27 IMG_4325 by Ronnierob, on Flickr

Kavi Ugl
Hi stilldellin, great photos but a pretty serious situation and it must raise further questions about the runway(work). stilldellin
Yes Kavi, a serious situation indeed but absolute lunacy ever to think the weather here in Shetland is going to change and that south-easterlies for weeks on end were finished with. I always said that they extended the wrong end of the runway. It would have cost megabucks but what was needed was to join up The Lang Ayre at Scatness to Little Holm and then on to Lady's Holm with an arm of Ladys Holm into Quendale Bay to give shelter to an extended west end of runway 09. All this in shallow water. But the powers that be think they can take on mother nature ! Glad to hear the driver according to reports has not been seriously injured, all recovery operations seem to have been suspended for today. Meanwhile, runway 09/27 closed, Scatsta closed due to cross-winds and no boats. ( Blyde plenty totties an saat piltocks )A last picture from today before shut down :-http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5545/12032662834_c6abff309e_c.jpgRunway 27 Sumburgh IMG_4541 by Ronnierob, on Flickr
Kavi Ugl
It wouldna surprise me if they had to abandon the whole project. I think today's incident shows that it just isn't going to work. Has some of the outer rock armour been washed away below the misantered digger?.
Twerto
Some of the rock armour had been removed (not washed away) as part of the current works going on at the moment
