Glad to hear you solved your problem but did you try Cntrl Alt Delete first? If that didn't work then yes, force a shutdown by turning off the power but in the first instance, CAD is usually the way to go to ensure you get a clean startup the next time you power up.

MS updates can be a right pain!

crtl-alt-del doesnt work on the processing updates screen

in any case its been many years since that option rebooted a PC

True dependent upon the update but it does work on Win 7 to take you to the screen to either log off or use the task manager to end the task, etc.

Correct. However, if the machine has actually hung on updates then nothing but rebooting it will stop that. To say that it has probably caused another problem is unlikely. If that was the case then you would more than likely see symptoms at boot.

Chances are you will get windows moaning at you the next time you go to shutdown to tell you that there are updates to be installed. If that continues then, yes you have a problem. One or more of the updates are failing to install for some reason. Could be sausage all but it could be something more serious.

Guessing that by now you would have found out whether it was or not. :)

it was only on the screen for 30 mins according to the poster, id hardly call that a hang, in relation to windows update times.

also as the hdd light was flashing then it hasnt hung, it was processing - thats why i said it was dangerous to switch it off at that point

This happened during my last update. As already said, forced shut down is the only way.

Depending on your windows update settings (which is usually automatic for most people), Windows will try the updates again very soon. It did with mine and was okay then.

If you have ongoing problems, go into System Restore and restore your system to an earlier date, prior to when all these problems started (ie 18 Nov 2012 or earlier). You won't lose personal data in doing this.

Use help function and type "restore" to find it and then follow the instructions - it's pretty simple (famous last words :D ). Windows updates will then catch up again as long as the setting is for automatic.
