peeriebryan
I've just read this on the Shetland News site - Invites out for new Shetland party Members of the local branch of the UK Independence Party have now jointly left UKIP to work on the concept of a new local partyAm I right in thinking UKIP was briefly lead by Kilroy-Silk! The party would strive for greater autonomy, would be anti-EU, would be neither socialist nor right wing, and would build politically on the work the Shetland and Orkney Udal Law (SOUL) group has been doing over the last years.Anti EU? Surely not a good thing for Shetland Neither socialist nor right wing? Yet run by members of the very right wing UKIP Party, and in MHO, Udal law appears to be a fairly left wing concept. Political schizophrenia? What Alistair Carmichael votes on has nothing to do with us, it is always the party that tells him what to do.Considering the sterling work Mr Carmichael has done recently re: Shetland for Sakchai, I'm not sure they'll garner much support by taking a pop at him just now, especially in light of UKIP's anti immigration policies That's the first I've heard of it, so I'll be watching the situation with interest Has anybody got any more info on this new party? Jordan
I just read the article and my only reaction was that of laughter.
McFly
neither socialist nor right wing Hmmmm.......Blair's "Third way" turned out to be eighties tory policy dressed up in more stylised, nebulous language. They sound fairly right wing to me. And I'm not sure that this type of inward looking parochialism is really of any benefit. And you're right about it being a mistake to have a go at Alasdair Carmichael, PB. I reckon AC has way more initiative and nous than most parliamentary MPs. Rourkes Drift
I don't think that we have anything to worry about with regard to a Shetland Party in this day and age. People will be outward thinking enough to vote on national as well as local issues, and on that basis a part such as this is surely a non starter politically? Shetland is doing not bad out of the present system, oil reserves and the initiatives of our people. On this basis, surely we don't need a Shetland Party at all??! Evil Inky
Am I right in thinking UKIP was briefly lead by Kilroy-Silk! If I remember correctly, they wouldn't make him leader, so he went off and formed his own party, Vertias.

RickB
I want them to intoduce a box at the balot with none of the above! But what happens if "none of the above" gets most votes?
Ghostrider
I want them to intoduce a box at the balot with none of the above! But what happens if "none of the above" gets most votes? Doesn't that happen already? There are usually more abstainers in an election than votes for the eventual winner, a "none of the above" would give us abstainers a chance to vote. Personally I'd like to see everyone given two votes, one to vote in the person you want to get in, and one to veto the person you don't want representing you under any circumstances, and you could use either one, or both. Come the count the eventual winner was the candidate who's tally was highest after the number of vetos against them was deducted from the number of positives they'd received. Re-run the election with none of the previous candidates allowed to stand ?
Tom
In the States there's a line where you can write-in a candidate if you want - Mickey Mouse actually wins elections for minor positions now and then, but as he's not resident in the locality, is prevented from taking up posts.
