DWP – Department of Wayward Perversion?

Call him RTU: In the Army to which he once belonged, failures were ‘Returned To Unit’ (or quietly retired). This man’s policies are not just failures; they’re disasters.

So let’s give him the nickname he deserves.

Is the madness currently exhibited by the Department of Work and Pensions a symptom of the Secretary-in-a-State’s personal condition, or an indication of a much wider malaise?

This is a question we should be asking, publicly, with increasing frequency as each new revelation about the Department’s irrational behaviour is revealed.

This article, for example, suggests that wayward perversion is now normal behaviour there. How else is one to interpret the actions of government officers who refuse to carry out a function for which they have all the tools and information necessary, while practically foaming at the mouth in their eagerness to convince us that they can manage assessment tasks - even if they must be done by hand and at enormous cost?

Today we learned that Samuel Miller, the disability specialist accusing the British government of employing draconian austerity measures to expose its sick and disabled citizens to fatal stress, has received new information from the DWP on the deaths of disability benefit claimants.

The department published an ‘ad hoc’ report in July last year, on deaths that occurred during 2011, but – perhaps discouraged by the overwhelmingly negative backlash caused by the admission that an average of 73 people were dying every week after being marked ‘fit for work’ or able to make themselves ready for work – its ministers have refused to publish a follow-up.

Freedom of Information requests from both Mr Miller and myself have been refused – mine on the grounds that it was “vexatious†(although the DWP definition of this word clearly differs from that defined in the relevant Act of Parliament).

Now it has confirmed that “the Department does hold information which could be used to analyse the mortality of benefit claimants after November 2011 but this has not been compiledâ€.

The information is all there, waiting to be provided. People have requested it, under an Act of Parliament that states it must be handed over, if it is in the public interest for that to happen. But ministers have vetoed this, stating reasons that can only be described as perverse.

Here, you don't fancy maybe giving a short excerpt and then perhaps giving, say, a breakdown of your opinion against the article you've copied? Might give more leverage and a greater understanding to whatever you're trying to achieve?

Here yourself!

The Government are hiding the statistics on how many people have died as a result of their draconian policies/cuts. I dont think i need to spell it out to you why they are hiding this figure.

The Government are hiding the statistics ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''.

It is not just the GOV.

Recent requests via FOI act show that while councils can count those who are on benefits and under occupy, therefore attracting an additional levy, they seem unable to give numbers on those who over occupy, those who live in cramped conditions. This is due to an interpretation of the Data Protection Act, they too will not reveal the numbers of those in social housing who under or over occupy and do not claim benefits. They will not also reveal the numbers of tenants who sub let and live elsewhere, which I believe has happened in Shetland.

If the public knew that those who over occupy were moving into houses/flats of folk who under occupy, we could go some way into appreciating the policy. Add of course to that, the disabilities many of those who under occupy have to deal with.

Add to that the stress that is invoked by the constant scrutiny much more than some politicians get, but are in need of, it cannot be the main foundation of a stable and productive life, both personally and socially. Therefore, the benefit to the community could be minimal yet the burden maximised in another area say health.

What are you suggesting? some sinister plan to murder the poor and disabled through reducing financial hand outs?

The welfare system in this country is better than most of the rest of the planet

. That is certainly a good thing and yes it could perhaps be even better if the liblabcon didn't lose billions of pounds to the corrupt EU & ridiculous overseas aid, much of which is swallowed up by corrupt regimes.

I am aware of several benefit claimants in Shetland, claiming " on the sick" who are actually just bone idle or wallowing in self pity.

The system needs to be toughened up.

Go live in the Phillipines,Venezuala, India or any country on the African continent etc, etc and gain some sense of perspective.

Correct , Nigel Farage's visit to Scotlan was hijacked by a bunch of moronic yobs and of course that incident was jumped on by the media in what has clearly become a witch hunt of UKIP by the "establishment contrlolled " media.

My my.

The word 'article' in my post should have been plural.

Whilst you're creating a 'nice' archival thread it's somewhat lacking objectivity, no? By all means carry on but, if you have a campaign do please share.

Given your disingenuous somewhat snide manner i can only assume that you have no personal experience of Atos or know of anyone who is suffering as a result of their incompetency.

Call it whatever you want but when you are inflicting cuts on the the sick and disabled, the working poor and the unemployed whilst giving handouts to millionaires through tax cuts and by choosing to ignore tax evasion/avoidance which would recover many multiples of the amount saved by the cuts imposed on those who can least afford it.

Take the Bedroom Tax as one example of the above where figures show that 660,000 people are affected of whom 420,000 have a disability recognised by the Disability Discrimination Act and of whom 96% have no chance of being rehomed and will have to pay the tax more than likely out of their benefits which are also being cut dis-proportionally and just to rub salt into the wounds the disabled people will probably be found "fit for work" by Atos and then have to go through the appeals process which can take many months which in turn has a serious effect on their already fragile health condition.

Does not sit right with me!

The welfare system in this country is better than most of the rest of the planet

It most certainly is not whilst not at the bottom of the table of social spending as a %age of GDP it is by no means either at the top.

That is certainly a good thing and yes it could perhaps be even better if the liblabcon didn't lose billions of pounds to the corrupt EU & ridiculous overseas aid, much of which is swallowed up by corrupt regimes.

I agree there should be a safety net for those who need it.

I am aware of several benefit claimants in Shetland, claiming " on the sick" who are actually just bone idle or wallowing in self pity.

The system needs to be toughened up.

A ha now the old "scrounger, skiver, shirker" statement that we always get back to. I believe the figure quoted on benefit fraud is 0.7%

Whilst any kind of fraud is not right neither is it right to punish the ones who are claiming legitimately as a means of weeding out the dishonest ones.

Go live in the Phillipines,Venezuala, India or any country on the African continent etc, etc and gain some sense of perspective.

Strange comparison to make and does not really warrant a reply. Likewise you could go to one of the countries who have better social welfare systems in place and experience it.

Correct , Nigel Farage's visit to Scotlan was hijacked by a bunch of moronic yobs and of course that incident was jumped on by the media in what has clearly become a witch hunt of UKIP by the "establishment contrlolled " media.

Regardless of how you dress it up in my opinion UKIP will never have any Political stance in Scotland and you are in the minority if you think other wise.

Thanks for your message though and would you now like to share your thoughts on Atos?

HASLAND: Man collapsed but still ‘fit for work’

http://i1359.photobucket.com/albums/q799/magnacube/9e3e3313-2770-44cc-92b4-6d4cecdea483_zpsaf978800.jpg

A man who became so unwell during an assessment by benefit inspectors that he was asked if he ‘needed an ambulance’ - was still declared fit to work.

John Flanagan, 64, has a degenerating spine, is unable to stand or walk far, heart disease and problems with his nervous system but was told by benefits test firm Atos that he could do a job.

Six weeks after the assessment Mr Flanagan collapsed due to problems with his nervous system and was rushed to hospital.

He said: “I wasn’t feeling well at all when I went for the assessment, due to stress. They just made me feel worthless. These people don’t have a heart they have a cash machine.â€

Mr Flanagan, of Talbot Steet, Hasland worked at Chesterfield Tube Works for 25 years until problems with his back meant he needed a less manual job. He then worked in security for ten years, but seven years ago two cardiac arrests and severe problems with his nervous system saw him give up work.

The dad-of-two is now appealing Atos’s decision but has had his benefits cut and told he must seek work.

Wife Joyce, 63, added: “My husband was getting so unwell and stressed during the assessment they asked if he needed an ambulance. I can’t believe they think he’s fit for work. He has worked all his life but now must go through more stress with the appeals process.â€

MP says case ‘crosses the line of basic decency’

Mr Flanagan’s case has been taken up by Colin Hampton of Derbyshire unemployed workers centre in Chesterfield and MP Toby Perkins. Mr Hampton said: “The government is effectively killing its own citizens and labelling everyone on benefits as scroungers. How many more people have to suffer or how many more deaths will there be before this is changed.†Mr Perkins added: “This situation crosses the line of basic British decency.

“Mr Flanagan is an extremely unwell man, who has worked for most of his life and is being made more unwell by this unfair and inconsistent process.â€

The Derbyshire Times approached Atos for a comment, but had not received a response as it went to press.

In total, between January 2011 and November 2011, some 10,600 claims ended and

a date of death was recorded within six weeks of the claim end

What a load of rubbish, ders folk dyin noo adays dat niver died afore...

People get old, frail and disabled and eventually die , everybody eventually and no amount of state hand outs is going to change that.

Yes , we might not have the best welfare system on a table of country by country, but you know for a fact it's much better here than for the vast majority of other human beings on this planet.

Yes , your probably right that we will be stuck with either the liblabcon or some SNP fake government, each following orders from the unelected EU overlords.

I note you never tried to answer on the vast expense of EU membership or the overseas aid budget , much of which disappears with no knowledge of how it is spent...

.

If you are aware of these folk, then you should be reporting them. If you do not, you could be seen as part of the problem and as guilty for not bringing it to the correct authorities. It seems everyone knows a "scrounger" yet does nothing. Spineless really. I suppose you think someone else should do it.

If you do report them, and they are not what you think they are (you may have a touch of Kavi Eye Syndrome) then it will give you the opportunity to apologise.

Looks can be deceiving...

....and being a snitch grassing folk up left right and centre is a admirable and honourable trait then is it? It really will help your social standing and possibly your future career prospects if it becomes known you subscribe to that route, won't it!?!

The "correct authorities" as you choose to term them, are paid handsomely out of the pocket of the public to effectively monitor and police the systems providing financial support they are charged with running, its time they did, and did fairly and effectively the job they're paid to do. The public is NOT paid to do it, the public have already paid others to do it for them. No point in owning a dog if you have to bark for it.

Have you ever thought about doing stand up comedy?

As they say "when your time comes" the problem is these people are going before their time.

Your last post said "The welfare system in this country is better than most of the rest of the planet"

Make your mind up which is it?

Yes , your probably right that we will be stuck with either the liblabcon or some SNP fake government, each following orders from the unelected EU overlords.

Maybes aye maybes naw

How observant of you.....Likewise you never shared your thoughts on Atos
