Colin
Can I suggest that the page titled 'Shetland Rumor Mill' on a well know social media site would be a better destination for this sort of post - not wanting to stand in the way of a bit of cooncil-bashing, but I suspect the o/p could easily have established that is was in fact only the building which was sold....You sure? I was told by a 'well placed' bus driver that his boss was 'gob smacked' that the SIC had sold the bus park along with the building and was now having to pay a rent/lease to use it.. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong but, either way, the underlying point is that the SIC (who are acting on our behalf) chose to completely ignore public opinion and have acted in a way that is detrimental to the bus travelling public. If I am wrong and the SIC still owns the bus park then why do they not spread grit/salt on the walkways when they appear to do so on everything else? The pavement from the south end of the bus park onto commercial road is that steep that snow and ice make it quite dangerous. As for the new owners of the Viking, why should they care about bus travellers? I suspect that they have figured out that people very rarely catch a bus to go out for a Chinese meal... Ghostrider
If I am wrong and the SIC still owns the bus park then why do they not spread grit/salt on the walkways when they appear to do so on everything else? Have they ever? I have no personal experience of catching a bus from the Viking "as is", I developed such a deep seated hatred of bus travel by being forced to use them all my schooldays I avoid them unless in life or death situations. But back in the day of the "old" Viking all the place ever got, maybe, if you were lucky was for a gritter to take a quick turn through it, which was usually "okay" enough to stop the buses drifting too far sideways when they used it, but it remained lethal underfoot for pedestrians. The steps down to Commercial Road and up to the upper Viking were always death traps, it was easier, quicker and safer, snow or no, to use the grassy slope alongside the steps behind the old cafe building instead. Urabug
Every attempt was made to ensure the safety of the public when the bus station was manned, ample amounts of grit was applied where and when necessary, the council gritters used to take a turn around the parking area as well. If this is not continued then it's only a matter of time before something serious happens. Who supervises the buses now when they are manoeuvring into there respective parking areas.? Who will be responsible when someone comes to grief ? If I was a bus operator this would cause me some concern! The bus station attendant used to help the drivers park as it was part of his job,and it was not allowed to reverse without supervision. Safety appears to be compromised now.
