SNP - Proposed airgun legislation

Seems to me that the airgun laws proposed are more to do with which powers the Scottish Government is given rather than what's a real priority for the public. They're desperate to get more legislative power and (dismissively by Westminster) have been given legal powers over air rifles and setting speed limits. So it's air rifles for now - new speed limits to follow soon no doubt.

If Westminster had given them powers over standardising straw baskets there would be new kishie-making rules coming too.

Fair enough, it's probably a good idea to get air rifles out of the hands of Glasgow neds, but it seems a costly (and probably futile) way to set about it.

......

Example: Handguns. IIRC there's never been any many handgun related crimes. Yet Joe Public hasn't been allowed to buy them for quite some time....

Quite wrong there, handguns needing a license are still available.

Pedantic, but correct.

Single shot .22 target pistols and the very occasional 'special' licence apart, handguns are not available to Joe Public.

Your post gives the impression that handguns are generally still available.

Which they are not.

You can purchase them if you have a license. These types of weapon are not part of the consultation, which, at first glance seem OK. This debate however is not new. Personally, I think there is a need for some form of registration though I worry that the information needed to obtain such a weapon (of the lower power) could be too much. If you, or any one is concerned, complete the consultation and write to your representative.

you can get single shot humane killers bigger than .22 that fire single bullets on licence.

gun control has not reduced the number of guns in criminal hands. i doubt it was ever intended to. just the government reacting to a gun spee killing. We should be glad that they have not imposed tougher laws on shot guns after the Cumbria shootings.

Who will file it unread in the large open topped container to the side of their desk bearing the label "Waste Bin", and continue debating with themselves how many hours their lunch hour is going to last today.

In 2007 the government introduced the VCR act [violet crime reduction ] this included various laws regarding airguns .Since then offences involving airguns in Scotland has fallen 71% to 195 offences last year .The lowest figure since records began .This would suggest that these news laws are working. So why on earth is the SNP going to scrap this and bring out a completely new set of laws that are going to cost millions and take up a huge amount of police time.If this is a early example of SNP control freakery then they will not be getting my vote.

May have something to do with them being on the head table.

The Queen signing the Assent to allow this to happen.

No one put up a robust enough objection.

Oh, hang on, should you not protest to them also?

Have you found out how many folk have needed hospital treatment because of air gun injuries? As you are so concerned with costs, it could be another way of either defending or attacking the consultation contents?

I do know that 13,334 people required hospital treatment after car crashes last year in Scotland .But to go back to the SNP proposals which will mean under 18 year olds will be banned from getting a licence for a low powered airgun but 14 year olds can get a shotgun licence or a fire arms certificate .That does not make sense.

The trouble with the SNP is that in their desperation to win votes in the west coast of Scotland they have had to out socialist the Glasgow labour party mafia .This has made them almost a marxist outfit it may well win them votes in Glasgow but in turns most Scots off.The ironic thing is most Scots are very Conservative in nature.
