SNP - Proposed airgun legislation

The trouble with the SNP is that in their desperation to win votes in the west coast of Scotland they have had to out socialist the Glasgow labour party mafia .This has made them almost a marxist outfit it may well win them votes in Glasgow but in turns most Scots off.The ironic thing is most Scots are very Conservative in nature.

If the Scots are so Conservative by nature then perhaps you can let loose how the people in the Glasgow shipyards have been voting for some time now and why you only comment on the SNP's vote on the west coast when it is common across the country?

Tell me again, how many MP's do the tories have in Scotland? 1? 2?

Yet the conservatives are the only party to get over 50% of the vote in Scotland - in the 1955 General Election.

Given that the Labour Party are probably more right wing now than the Conservatives were in 1955 then perhaps nothing much has changed?

Interesting that it's becoming increasingly difficult to get a fag paper between any of their political positions.

There's a toddler in a grave half a mile from where I'm sitting, it's right at the cemetery entrance, I pass it most days, his toys still sitting there. He was shot through the eye by a clown with an airgun.

One death is one too many, nobody should have an airgun unless they "need" one.

Tragic.. Been shot myself.. Not a nice feeling but, would you care to define "need"?

an air gun is a weapon not a toy. same rules should apply if caught with one without a good cause. treat it as the same as a knife.

its sad that a child has died because a fool shot at a child with one. that really speaks more about the humanity of the shooter than that air rifles are deadly.

they are not toys and should never be treat as such. they are made to kill things not to be played with. but having to licence them is too far. people would then opt for lower powered firearms that will pose a bigger risk.

Agrees with Colin, tragic but ... would you ban all cars, staircases, bottles of milk (choking), sweets (choking), slippers (mum trips whilst carrying toddler), conkers, yachts, fairground rides, folding pushchairs? You can't ban items because the minority are irresponsible. Laws created should be based on appropriate reactions; how many airguns are in circulation and look at how many are used in a responsible manner.

Agreed.. But, still playing 'devil's advocate' here.. Air Weapons are definitely NOT toys and they exist for one purpose only.. Killing things.

What gets me about the whole debate is that the government of the day, for whatever reason, chooses to 'disarm' the people at every opportunity and the slightest excuse for a 'knee jerk' type reaction is all that is needed.

We will never, imho, reach a position where everyone can be trusted(?) with any kind of weapon and to follow the governments logic to it's extreme end, we could end up being done for looking at someone 'in a funny way'.

There are already quite a few controls on the type of air weapon that you can purchase. If they are applied correctly, then they should be sufficient.

You cannot legislate for 'nutters'.

Air guns do not just exist for killing things, thousands of people (who have never killed a thing) get a lot of pleasure from competitive target shooting.

I myself have enjoyed target shooting and archery.

I wonder if compound bows will be next as they pack some serious power and are a lot more lethal than an air gun.

Yes they do. That is the whole reason that they are made. OK, you may 'choose' to use them for other purposes such as target shooting but, if there wasn't a 'need' to kill things, would they have been invented?

As for bows, yes, they are lethal in the wrong hands and, I may be wrong, but aren't crossbows already restricted/banned?
