Mag Posted February 13, 2013 Report Share Posted February 13, 2013 The YouGov poll showed that 7 out of 10 people support the proposals to allow gay people to marry and 9 out of 10 gay people support the proposals, so I would be very surprised and disappointed if Shetlinkers voted against this. Young LGBT people are 3 times more likely to feel unsafe at school, are more likely to be assaulted and harassed, and may eventually internalise the homophobia and have difficulty accepting themselves. They are 4 times more likely than their heterosexual peers to attempt suicide. Many studies have shown a clear link between the high rates of suicide attempts among LGBT teens and a conservative environment that does not support LGBT equality in terms of legislation as well as culture. So I would like to say thank you to Alistair Carmichael for voting for a bill that may, indirectly, save some precious young Shetland lives. This has helped continue to let as many people in Shetland know what Alistair Carmichael MP voted on the subject of redefining marriage. Plus as a added bonus you have helped remind me why Papa Stour is one of the best places for me to live. Shall we have a mini vote of our own on Shetlink. Is the UK Gov wrong to redefine marriage? Did our MP ask for the people of Shetlands views on redefining marriage at the last election? Or shall we leave all the opinions and real voting to Alistair Carmichael MP? Let him think for us!! If you are so convinced your MP doesn't represent the views of the 'people' why don't you just set this thread up with a poll and let the voting commence? You're living in the past and that would be further verified by a poll. Then I suppose you will just deride Shetlink users ars being unrepresentative of opinion.As i said earlier, AC has been very open in explaining why he voted the way he did and was under no coercion to do so - in other words he voted in line with his own principles and believes. Its impossible for an MP to canvass on every issue that might come up. I wonder if he knows our views on horse meat,for instance. When we elect someone,we do so from a point that that person roughly is in accord with our views. No MP...even a christian one,is going to have exactly the same views as you. By all means,have a mini poll,I am not sure what you hope to achieve at this point. You could stand for parliament,if you feel that your views are under represented,or maybe start locally,like a councillor for example. There have been christian candidates for these positions recently,but they had very few votes...what does that tell us,do you think? i imagine that living on a tiny island,with a tiny population ensures that you are unlikely to encounter many other view points or life styles...which is a shame. I find hearing peoples stories,trying to empathise with them,understanding that we can`t all believe the same thing (including your view point) helps me try to be a better person. There was a man once,who said something about taking a speck out of one`s own eye first..... even though I think he did not exist....seems a good thing to do!! Good idea. In fact anyone could do it. Set the proposed question in this thread so if anyone has any objections to the wording a new wording can be formulated that everyone is happy with. Then start a poll and see what the lay of the land is. This thread has had a lot of responses so I would think a poll like this would have some value as a indicator of Shetlink users opinion. Skyumpi Posted February 16, 2013 Report Share Posted February 16, 2013 Gosh.What a to do over very little.One of the things that continues to surprise me is the fuss made over whether being gay comes down to simple genetics or a matter of choice - like deciding what your favourite colour is. Maybe it's something you can change through an act of will - "I really do prefer blue!" or maybe it isn't. The implication that "maybe it's not their fault" might make it OK whereas same sex sex through choice is somehow worse baffles me. Surely the point is...... who should really care if your favourite colour is red, you're a girl who prefers girls, or a boy who lusts after other boys this year but might not next year when you meet this most amazingly interesting lass? Who cares if choose to be gay on Tuesday and Wednesday but straight the rest of the time? In answer to some of the fears expressed over how gay marriage might affect the mankinds viability, there are a lot of things that might compromise the future of the human race. It's amazing that anyone is still grinding out the sort of mediaeval 'repent' tripe that was used by the Inquisition and the Church State to coerce anyone who does not conform. I suppose that seeing as showing the 'ignorant savages' the error of their ways is now frowned upon, it is not really much of a surprise that those in religious circles who seek to control the populace can only express their bigotry by targeting smaller and ethnically broader groups.
