oldscalloway
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.Dwight D. Eisenhower, From a speech before the American Society of Newspaper Editors, April 16, 1953 Interesting comment from a Republican President in 1953. He was very aware and worried by the power of the military/industrial complex even then, and his ideas have proved to be so correct. The most powerful country in the world is ruled by that military/industrial complex.

klanky
Apt http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-21528464 "Officials said hundreds of millions of pounds could be diverted from aid to peacekeeping and stabilisation operations, particularly in fragile states." Yup, we could sell them guns. Everyone wins...... Putting a slightly more serious hat on, I always worry when I see politicians mentioning "peacekeeping and stabilisation operations". It's usually code for sending our troops into some distant turdehole to fight in an unwinnable and unsustainable war for "stability in the region". Perhaps we should make the UK's motto 'Pax Americana'?
