It's example of the oil companies not accepting poor business standards - play the game correctly or you won't be allowed to play.

It's got nothing to do with the continued use of Scatsta - that's not in question. There will just be a different company flying in and out. End of.

^^ You're not supposed to "do" anything in them....you're supposed to come in one door and get out the other PDQ.... Ask any member of staff, people = work, and the longer said people are there, the greater the pile of work they create for someone. Not a good thing.

Sumburgh used to get crowded, when you had up to three Viscount loads of very bored fogbound oilies waiting for hours to be told whether they were coming or going....and to where and when....not no more, there ain't enough flights or passengers going through Sumburgh to crowd it anymore.

I think the airports in Shetland are cramped and there's not much you can do there.

Some days I think you're a young person, a bit naive, coming up with statements that are sometimes viewed as a bit dumb. Other days I think you're a bored net troll who just digs up old threads and tries to start some controversy. And on yet other days I wonder if you are in fact pretty smart and are using Shetlink as a way of testing ideas for some market research operation.

The above statement has so many issues. Have you been to many Shetland Airports? The terminal building at Sumburgh is pretty big for a small island community with the traffic levels we have. Compared to say Manchester International, Heathrow, Edinburgh etc. I'm sure it seems to be cramped and devoid of entertainment, but there's rather less going through it.

What do you really want to know? What is the underlying point of your post?

No really, I'd like to know.

Perhaps that's the attitude up here and would be consistent with some of the behaviour I've seen (the 'wink' is noted), however, other airports I've been to view people being around as an opportunity to make money. Rightly or wrongly, you can at least get something to eat in most airports after 8pm.

I'm not trawling back through this thread in case it's been said already, but I'm constantly amazed at how dire the café at Sumburgh is. If someone came off a flight and tried to eat there, what a first impression. Or last impression if you tried to nosh there before leaving.

Cramped

Are you talking Fair Isle and Foula departure lounge?

Or is there an International departures on Forvik now?

Sumburghs terminal is huge in comparison to what they really need. Suggest you have a good look around next time you pass through, you could use the upstairs as an indoor football pitch.

As for there's not much to do - what would you like to do? Even Aberdeen struggles to make this work. Over the past 4 years there's been gaming machines, a betting area and a Baxters shop, all of which have now moved on

Various people have tried. However there are no transit passengers i.e. no captive market. Shops have come and gone. Somedays the passengers Most travellers come and go as fast as possible. Most airports are misearble places to hang around in if you don't have to. When an airport runs at its highest efficiency you don't see people hanging about.

Again most people don't hang around to eat- its mainly the poor staff who have little other choice. However if someone was to approach the airport with exciting plans to open an eating emporium they'd have no problem getting the go ahead. Its totally open to anyone who wants to offer a better service......................................fill your boots! If i remember correctly no was interested last time it was advertised.

However Sumburgh is big enough to turn into a bowling hall and music centre. Just 25 minutes from the town centre. Save us an absolute fortune.

Perhaps doglover was referring to another of our airports : Skerries, Whalsay, Papa??? The only time Sumburgh is cramped is when Scatsta is fogged out.

Who runs it now then? If you have delays, which you can have due to weather conditions, etc, then people might well want to eat something - either a meal or even just a reasonable snack. Also, depending on time of day, you could have travelled from the other end of the mainland, or from the islands, to get to the airport, then check-in time, then the flight..

I think you kind of already answered the question, bit of trolling methinks. You'll also find that doglover never seems to respond to direct questions.

As everyone else has said Sumburgh is far bigger a terminal than it needs to be.

[***Posts merged from BT phone faults & airport closed thread***]

Maybe we should look into Scatsta being Licensed to take domestic flights which has been ruled out on a number of occasions due to the SIC involvement or should I say INVESTMENTS AND SHAREHOLDING in Sumburgh, The staff at Scatsta dont have any problem with it the only restriction on outbound passengers come from our elected chambers !

While Im aware that the £852,000 the council provided in services and assistance towards the Sumburgh runway extension, I can't recall reading or seeing when the SIC bought shares in Sumburgh Airport? Which is owned by Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd which I understand is wholly owned by the Scottish Ministers? Can you provide information to when the public purse bought shares in a government owned company?
