Shetland's airports (and parking)

Angry about car parking charges at the airport?

Get the ferry.

If that happened the airport might realise that they shot themselves in the foot, but the same government person who controls the airport has proven that they will do everything they can to delay the reduction of travel cuts to the ferries.

Plus those introducing the parking charges, know fine well that the ferries can’t cope at peak seasons and that we have no other choice but to use Sumburgh.

Both the ferry and airport are lifeline services and they have got us over a barrel. I wonder how they have managed to complete all the renovations to the airport so far without this charge.

Utter nonsense the airport is a lifeline service, the only way it could be described as that would be for NHS patients who are getting free parking anyway.

You choose to live here and going on holiday is a luxury, the same can be said for the people who don’t live on the bus route

Definition from the Collins Dictionary-

“A lifeline is something that enables an organization or group to survive or to continue with an activity.”

Without the ferries and air travel Shetland could not survive, it’s not all about going on holiday, what about business and the movement of products necessary for the islands. All this will do is put costs up.

I’m not the only one who has been stuck at Sumburgh due to weather delays waiting to pick someone up, yet I will be expected to pay £3.00 for the privilege.

As for “you chose to live here”. I was born here, my family is here and I will do what I can to ensure the the expensive cost of living here doesn’t get further out of hand.

  • 2 weeks later...

Does anyone have a link to the Passenger Survey that HIAL ....

"Hial’s chairwoman Lorna Jack has insisted the charges must be rolled out from 1st July to help the airport authority balance the books......
However, she has insisted the organisation has a listening ear and has urged customers to take part in the passenger survey which was announced last week."

I cannot find any link anywhere to fill in.

I wrote to HIAL an email about the parking costs and in their reply to me they said.....

"I have committed to listen to the views of passengers and those who use our facilities ahead of the charges being introduced on July 1st. This includes a survey of passengers which will be undertaken this April and I would invite you to provide structured feedback via the survey."

But no link so where is it.

I googled "HIAL Passenger Survey" and found nothing.

I went to their website and Searched Passenger Survey - and found nothing.

I am beginning to think it is "on display at the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying beware of the leopard."

Why bother answering any survey, they have already stated on radio Shetland that they are introducing the charges anyway as they need to balance the books. This is a token survey.

They can argue that charges happen at most other airports, but those airports usually have good transport links unlike Shetland. More importantly, when people fly from these airports they can get very cheap flights unlike here here we are as usual paying through the nose.

This is just another tax and the Scottish government after pressure give us a bit of a discount, but they will ways find new ways of getting it back.

If this is what island proofing is about then we are being taken for fools yet again.

Those at the top both airport heads and government officials, who are holding us to ransom, want to seriously look at their positions and hang their heads in shame when they pick up their over inflated wages.

Everyone should write across the so called survey, saying “waste of time decision already made”.

Bottom line here is that, for whatever reason, they want/need extra cash..

Only way they will ever get it is through paying customers.

Increased landiing fees, car parking charges, whatever other kind of "tax" they can think up.  Ultimately, the customer (who they have by the "short and curlies" has to pay for it.
