homophobia

Whenever homosexuality is discussed the conversation almost inevitably becomes polarized between two camps (for want of a better word...)

In many ways it’s reminiscent of religious debate, which invariable descends into a slanging match between atheists and fundamentalists, who are often, in my experience, as closed minded as each other.

The ‘homophobes’ who judge, denounce and hate are without doubt the worst culprits, but there’s an unhelpful element on the other side of the fence that does little to inform the debate.

In my opinion it’s a bit lazy to blithely accept the baseless dogma that apparently, 1 in 10 of us is homosexual, kids should be taught about the...er...shall we say 'mechanics' of gay sex in school and that anyone like me who’s slightly squeamish about the idea of homosexual sex is either a closet gay, a prude or a bigot.

Harking back to the religious analogy, I’m the first to admit that I simply don’t know what awaits us after death, be it some benevolent Santa clause-esque dude or simply nothing at all. I admit I have some vaguely formed hope that we’re essentially ethereal vibrations – energy and consciousness that’s all interconnected. But I suspect that my conclusions are mainly down to listening to too many Beatles albums.

Likewise with the gay debate – I honestly don’t understand why a man would find another man sexually attractive. However, I’m keen to learn and have asked gay acquaintances what the appeal is. The answers vary, but in each instance it seems that the person I’d asked has either taken on a feminine characteristic and is therefore attracted to a dominant male, or occasionally it’s the other way round. Again, it's seemingly often the same with the lesbianism – the gay women I've met have almost always been butch and seem to be seeking out male traits without the hassle of an actual penis being involved.

Now, read back what I just wrote. Note there is no malice or judgement in the last paragraph, merely a set of unchallenged conclusions that, frankly, I’d like to discuss more. These opinions are not fact, nor is my outlook set in stone.

My point is that those of us who are not innately hateful should be free to exhibit a curiosity and form an opinion (without judgment or personal insults) on the lifestyles, tastes and practices of others who have a different sexual orientation, without being cast as sexually repressed mini-Hitlers, no?

Well said Uncle Monty.

I'm a Christian and proud of it, and I cant help thinking that Jesus spent a lot of time with 'sinners', the disadvantaged and generally the people that most folk despised or disapproved of. He was also very disparaging of the 'holier than thou' folk who interpreted the scriptures to their own advantage. If he were here today I suspect that he would be lecturing the homophobics the same as he did the Pharisees. No wonder people turn against religion.

....like me who’s slightly squeamish about the idea of homosexual sex...

Aren't you squeemish that you might interconnect with another man's ethereal vibrations when you're dead?

... but in each instance it seems that the person I’d asked has either taken on a feminine characteristic and is therefore attracted to a dominant male,...

Is the dominant male gay too or are gay men only those who have taken on feminine characteristics?

or occasionally it’s the other way round.

Dominant gay men attracted to feminine (presumably gay) men?

Again, it's seemingly often the same with the lesbianism – the gay women I've met have almost always been butch and seem to be seeking out male traits....

That's not the same as non dominant attraction to dominant though like you first described. You're now describing dominant (butch) attraction to dominant (butch) attraction.

Is your point gay people still follow heterosexual stereotype gender roles of dominant attraction to non dominant?

Sorry, you've lost me there Gibber.

Not really. The afterlife remains a mystery to me. I have no doubt that a man can love another man in this world and possibly beyond... As I said, personally it's the mechanics (anal intercourse, to be blunt) that I find a little unpleasant.

Is the dominant male gay too or are gay men only those who have taken on feminine characteristics?

I would assume that both parties are gay or Bi-sexual. Did I imply otherwise?

As you have observed I'm obviously no expert.

I think I was just expressing my own confusion on the topic and largely attributing this to the fact that we can't discuss it without the whole discussion descending into an emotive, polarized argument.

So your confusion is with anal sex alone then, because bumming isn't just a gay thing. In fact lesbians (gay) have a difficult time doing bumming because they don't have winkies to do it with. And they have perfectly serviceable front bottoms anyway. And mouths.

I think I was just expressing my own confusion on the topic...

Lets try and clear this up then. Imagine you're on a space shuttle flying to Mars to fix a wheel bearing on that little rover that's up there looking at the rocks and your crew consists of you (captain), some hot bits of crumpet like those birds off of the cover of FHM or Loaded (in charge of mission logistics and rocketry) and Anne Widdicombe (mission specialist in space cooking, UFO spotting and inertial guidance). Would you have vaginal and/or oral sex with Anne Widdicombe who's totally up for it, rather than take up an offer of heterosexual anal sex with the babes in the cargo bay next to the jetpacks? (Keeping in mind the babes don't do oral, they're not tarts. And they won't do vaginal because the risk of pregnancy could lead to babysitting difficulties on a busy space shuttle)

And as it's anal sex you find unpleasant would you be open to offers of oral sex from Alan Titchmarsh (laser beams controller) or would you just not have any sex for the 5 year round trip while the rest of the crew have a free-for-all non-stop pan-sexual fandango in the engine room?

We need answers Monty, the Mars rover and it's rock samples depend on it.

Do forgive me- I appear to have voiced the massively extreme and right-wing opinion of not being into anal sex.

Perhaps I should retreat to my box set of Last of The Summer wine.. but wait! they're all men too! Maybe I'm a repressed homosexual myself. Drat.

To be honest I'm not really into female anal penetration, as I find the boring old conventional union of penis and vagina more pleasing for both parties (me and my missus), although I can only speak from personal experience.

I suppose it comes down to who you fancy. Is it possible that I'd be more aroused by Brad Pitt's nethers than Widdicome's mouth? Possibly... but again I suspect I'd find them equally unpleasant.

Can I just ask, why is it so surprising to you (and apparently a few others) that I personally find the idea of penetrating an anus (particularly a male one) so unappealing?
