Frances144
Is there Myxomatosis in Shetland or is it a 100% myxi free zone? (Myxomatosis is caused by the myxoma virus, a type of pox virus that only affects rabbits.)

MuckleJoannie
There used to be dozens aof rabbits around us at the Scord but they have disappeared recently. There are a lot of cats active around us but I don't think they could have got rthem all.
Colin
I have it on fairly good authority that a certain crofter from the Tingwall Valley deliberately re-introduced it late last year. I I had PROOF, I would report him....

Bigton Farm
Mixi was in South Mainland early summer 2012 maybe the 'good authority' knows where it came from?
fionajohn
with modern technology it is possible to trace the source of the infection in other words which field the rabbit fed on there in lies the proof

Colin
Mixi was in South Mainland early summer 2012 maybe the 'good authority' knows where it came from? In my case the 'good authority' was a relation to the offender who bragged that the infected rabbit had been captured/killed at the Ness and deliberately dumped in the Tingwall Valley in order to eradicate the local rabbit population. A deliberate act that should be punished if ever enough proper evidence comes to light.
shetlandpeat
Mixi can only be transmitted via live animals. They are the one that attract the flea. Fleas do not suck the congealed blood of a dead animal. The advice given about the disposal of infected carcases is to leave em to nature.
