Staney Dale
Yougov who are one of the top pollsters in the UK say that it seems to be a vocal minority who are against it as 49% are for it and 38% against it, even with all the bashing its been having. http://ukpollingreport.co.uk/blog/archives/7132 With all due respect that survey was done on 1525 people and the population of the UK is approximately 60,000,000 so i am not sure that is really a fair representation of the public's perception of this upcoming tax. Care to show me anymore polls to back up your statement? That's the way polls work - they don't survey the whole population.
insouciant
I think statistically speaking 1525 is a very good sample size
shetlandpeat
The general perception is also that benefits are more generous than they are – on average, people think that Jobseekers Allowance is £147 a week Now, polls can be quite misleading. Generally because folk have little grasp about what is really happening.
blueburn
I think statistically speaking 1525 is a very good sample size I do not agree. However if that be the case then this poll would be even more relevant as there were 2002 people surveyed. http://i1359.photobucket.com/albums/q799/magnacube/Snap2013-03-29at193502_zpsc8831baa.png
JustMe
Now if someone was to introduce an opinion poll asking the question "Do you think it is fair that people living in an "oversized" property should be subjected to the "bedroom tax" if they have applied and are on a waiting list for a smaller property and have not refused the offer of a suitable property?" I suspect that there would be a resounding NO.
BigMouth
How are these downsizing people going to afford to move? How many spare bedrooms has Buck House got? She's living off the state.
redrobbie
If the UK left the EU there would be plenty of money for housing http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/6198708/EU-costs-Britain-118bn-a-year.html
humptygrumpty
The problem is that even if people are happy to downsize there are not the smaller properties for them to move to. If they cannot afford to top up their rent by up to 25% from other benefits they will get into arrears with the council or HHA. This could lead to eviction. I know people who would downsize and be happy to do so but can't get rehoused. Any solution you have to this would be appreciated. If that was the case the surely the council would be at fault for not having suitable accomodation to offer you and you would just simply refuse to pay the difference. shetlandpeat
yup, imagine the out cry. due to the £40 million tied up providing accommodation for the oil industry, not much has been built.I wonder if you would have been happy fot the new housing to remain empty until this scheme started. blueburn
No wonder in most polls people are for it. It would appear that "most polls" was only 1......... I think statistically speaking 1525 is a very good sample size If that be the case then the survey done on 2002 people which is approximately 35% more than the one posted by Ironwithin then surely that must be compelling proof that more folk are against it than for it. I rest my case as both of your statements have been proven to be wrong I find it very disappointing that you both find this cut in money to be fair as it will cause real hardship to the people affected. I can only assume that you have never had to make the choice of whether to heat your home or feed yourself/children or to worry about how you are going to pay your rent and possibly face eviction.......... I shall not be replying to anything else either of you have to say as i do not wish to clog up this thread. All that is left from me now is to wish Jane all the best for today and thank her for making a stance against these cuts and i hope that she gets the support she deserves. Come on Shetlinker's (Is that the right word?) stand up together and be counted for the less fortunate who are unable to do so for themselves. If your in town around lunchtime pop by the Market Cross and show your support.
BigMouth
Surveys, such wonderful tools. In Leeds many years ago the upper deck on the buses was for smokers. The lower deck for non-smokers. The mum's and kids along with their grannies used to travel downstairs. Leeds City Transport decided that they wanted to stop smoking on buses, long before anyone was much interested in the link between smoking and cancer etc. so some office bods got off their chairs and did a survey, but only asked the people on the lower decks of the buses. Needless to say they got the result they wanted. Yorkshire folk are a determined lot, so they abided by the rule, but the smokers no longer bothered climbing the stairs to the upper decks, meaning that mums with pushchairs and grannies had to, who quickly moaned like drains to Leeds City Transport. So if you want to do a survey make sure that you ask the right people to give you the answer that you want to hear.
Staney Dale
^hmm, bit of a flouncy fit there, particularly against poor insouciant, who did nothing more than point out what is a reasonable sample size for a poll.
