MuckleJoannie
The latest plan for school closures is being issued. Whalsay will not now close. The country secondaries that will stay open will just do up to 3rd year, in line with the new curriculum. http://www.shetnews.co.uk/news/7069-new-plan-could-save-whalsay-secondary
paulb
just what they want the parents at whalsay to give way. lets now get this straight. the 3 more expensive schools will now remain open and the 2 with the best results will close. either shut them all including yell and unst or keep them open. whats the difference from a child having to travel over an hour and a 1/2 from the westside than the pupils on whasay doing the same. it could not have anything to do with the cut ferry services. whats wrong with the west and south side children not having the same treatment. i really don't see how that system will help one group but not others. also that plan was rejected in the first blueprint review as it was to disruptive. plus i don't trust a word that now comes from that woman's mouth. beware who you sup with. concerned shetlander
I am very happy for Whalsay that they have won their school closure battle, but I am sad for us on westside and sandwick for it will make it much harder for us to win our battle to keep open the secondary. I would think they are working on the principle of divide and conquer. Whalsay would have been a very good ally and we will just have to dig a lot deeper to try and win our battle if it should be legally. I will just have to dip into the bank account yet again to fight a council who should be fighting for us not against it's own people whom they should be representing. JGHR
I would think they are working on the principle of divide and conquer. Quite possibly, and either shut them all including yell and unst or keep them open it seems to be working.
paulb
our council are really good at spin. with the news that whalsey will remain open with a reduced provision they tag unst and yell onto it. sly what did they promise those two islands just recently. they can't seem to keep their word for 6 months let alone years. invicta
I'm starting to wonder if the new school will be built at the clickiminn as you cant really build it on top of waste which will have to be moved to a tip at considerable cost, which is very expensive as anyone who has had to tip commercial waste will know. MuckleJoannie
I would tink that the school site is to the west of the old dump. The dump basically filled in the North Loch. There is a map of the proposed site here http://www.shetnews.co.uk/news/6013-anderson-high-to-move-to-clickimin-campsite And you can see where the North Loch was on this map http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch/view/?sid=74479555 The dump was where the athletic track is. Claadehol
If, as some people involved in the education of our children might suggest, the corridors of power in Hayfield house are milling with failed teachers, why cant there be some redundancies here? There is every probability that the effect of these major savings on the education of our children would be minimal. papastour
I have just found out why possible buyers are not purchasing on Papa Stour Island. Top answer is the school is closed. Despite assuring buyers it is only mothballed, they do not see it as opening again.

paulb
that is a problem. some children are less suited to being boarded out. and if so why should they. the equality act comes into play.

unlinkedstudent
Some people might equally be attracted to living on an island where there were no sprogs or no school to brainwash the kids!
