Looking to move and wondering whether to bring our furniture with us, or buy some when we get here, as such our question is, how easy is it to buy here compared with mainland UK ?

How do the prices compare ?

Are there any new furniture shops ?

And 2nd hand furniture shops ?

Prices of such items as sofa ?

There are furniture shops, buying from Uk outlets can be problematic as the shipping of sofas etc, is costed at pallet rates (around £120-£150 per pallet).

Having said that, Stewart at Muddy Bay Furniture in Lerwick stocks a fair old range and is good to deal with. We've bought two double beds and wardrobes/chests of drawers etc for two bedrooms off him. He also stocks sofas and dining room furniture. http://www.muddybay.co.uk/index.html

Regarding sofas, we bought a three seater, two seater and chair off the Nabru (UK) website - who supply the seating in flatpack form and you build it up yourself. One advantage of this is you can get a three seater sofa into old crofthouses etc.... They delivered all three items on one pallet, so actually quite cost effective!

Very tough furniture, very tight fitting.

Agree with previous post about Muddy Bay (formerly LDS Furniture) - good selection, various price ranges and Stewart is really helpful over delivery etc.

If you want furniture from IKEA, you order through the Edinburgh store. They have an arrangement with Shetland Transport who pick up from Edinburgh fortnightly on a Thursday. So, you just pay IKEA for the goods (standard price) then you pay Shetland Transport when your stuff arrives in Shetland - they will deliver it to your home, or you can pick it up from their depot in Lerwick. We've ordered this way a couple of times and found IKEA Edinburgh really good, and the freight charged by Shetland Transport not too bad.

If you have the cash, then furniture ordered online from John Lewis comes up free delivery. Found it hard to believe when I was told this by a friend, but can confirm its true as splashed out on a new table and it was delivered without any additional charge.
