Everything is temporary, if you take the definition of the word to its logical conclusion. Fixture, or non-fixture might be better terms to debate over. Windmills as we have to put up with them in the here and now are fixtures, without much doubt.

 

 

Anyhow, do Town and Country Planning laws aquire themselves to ships?

Funnin aside.... I stand corrected if wrong, but I seem to think the SIC thought they were, when they told the guy at Voe he couldn't have his floating hut on a raft there no more.

 

Of course, the LPA are a greater power than the SIC, as the latter seem to be slowly learning (bloody expensively though), so such laws do not apply to them as they allegedly apply to mere mortals, and the undead like me.

 

 

The SIC have harbour powers over the whole of Shetland, with the execption of the Lerwick harbour.

Well you could stop shouting for a start.  Bad manners that is.  Then maybe you could consider that Sullom Voe is not really suitable for accommodation barges.  Big tankers moving around and the chance of an explosion however slight must rule that out.

 

LPA stands for Lerwick Port Authority and basically they are developing the port to meet whatever needs develop.  In the summer that is yachts and cruise ships, year round that is oil related traffic and of course fishing vessels.  Seem to remember there were a lot of fishing vessels out by the LHD wire store last week.  Bit of a brand new quay being used for a traditional use.

 

Boats laying two and three deep from the jetty?.  Nothing new there and certainly not limited to Lerwick.

 

And the two Scottish boats that broke their ropes?.  Now I cannot pre judge this but there are various reasons for a rope to break.  Obviously old or damaged ropes or just ropes badly tied.  Not saying they were but to blame the LPA and the accommodation barges really is pushing it until any enquiry has taken place.

 

Morrison dock?.  Is that only suitable for small fishing boats and how many of them were left before the accommodation barges first arrived.  Not that many!.

Good to know that there's still some people out there who feel that they need to support the fishermen of our community.

 

It's such a pity that your support is wrapped up into a narrow-minded rant against the LPA and the oilmen. 

 

Just let me know when the herring fleets re-appear, will you?

@ papsy: Morrison Dock was built for the fishing fleet, and now there's not many more than half a dozen decent sized boats fishing oot o' the toon, thanks to the EU, so if there's still around six gaps there's still room for them. The piers north of Morrison with the exception of the "Marina" were all built for specific commercial purposes or oil, not fishing docks, and those south were built by merchants of yore to further their own "commercial" enterprises, one way, or another.... and later taken over for north boat berths.

 

The Morrison has, by many accounts has never been much of a dock, I've had several of its users tell me over time that with a decent northerly it behaves like someone throwing stones in a paddling pool due to back wash. Perhaps somebody who knew this should have forewarned the Scotties to bend on an extra rope or two, and Serco might not have needed to panic over their pretty paint job.

 

So what if boats are doubled or trebled up? Anybody who marvels at that obviously doesn't remember back before the EU went through the fleet like a dose of the runs, and there were a decent number of fishing boats using the harbour. Every winter gale there were Scotties and locals lying six to eight deep from the steamers pier to the Bressay ramp and Norskies and Danes likewise from the Bressay ramp most of the way to the wire store. Okay, there were times with the worst of weather that a Scandinavian nearer the outer end had to keep steaming to hold the line up, and a rope carrying off did very occasionally happen, but it was rare, and exceptional that anybody broke loose.Seems to me that regardless of who or what is tied up in it, or what space there is, that the Morrison simply isn't the quality of facility it was supposed to be, or a match for what preceded it, and that perhaps maybe some crews just don't pay the same attention or take the level of precautions to ensure the security of their boat in exceptional weather that most of their predecessors did.

 

Yes, I'll agree that everybody, regardless of trade, who pays harbour dues deserves to get the service they pay for. However its also an unalienable fact that the LPA's first priority is their own bottom line, and offshore work is currently the single largest contributor to that bottom line, so will get first dabs. All fishing boats are currently minor earners for the LPA, so like the days before oil when the bigger fishing boats who contributed most to the bottom line more got first dabs at the prime quayside, and the small fry who contributed much less were relegated to inconvenient corners, now they're all relegated to the inconvenient corners as lesser earners, that's how the cookie crumbles with capitalism. Any change in that is only going to have to come through making the LPA a socialist or communist organisation......if anyone dares.

 

Its likely there will still be a few fishermen and fishing boats left when the current crop of floating tin houses and their occupants ship out, but in all probability there will be fewer than when the tin houses arrived, and it'll have a great deal more to do with EU antics than the tin house men, or where they've been parked.

Yeah Yeah, Shetland isn't an idyllic, quaint port etc. That shouldn't mean no consideration whatsoever is given to where things are placed. Seems to me that folk who don't really spend any time in Lerwick shouldn't be so quick to write us all off as xenophobic, moaning locals because we think the barges are eyesores.

In the days of the Esplanade toilets and old fishmarket, they blocked the view of the harbour from the Esplanade just as effectively as the barge there now. To me, the barge is no worse looking than those buildings were, and is temporary. But no doubt each person sees things differently.

The Esplanade toilets were only 1 story and, while not attractive, they were fairly unobtrusive. You're right though - people view things differently.

 

I concede that I'm probably in a minority, but when I first drove past I was amazed that anybody could think it was reasonable to berth such a huge construction on a long-term basis in such a small harbour. 

 

Admittedly you get used to it over time, but nah - I still think it's location is highly questionable.
