nebuchadnezzar
Hi everyone, Myself and my partner are moving to Shetland in mid September and are planning on starting a family. This might sound stupid but do Shetlanders have their kids on Shetland or do they go to Scotland. Also, is there a list of clubs or social groups available anywhere. I/We are interested in meeting new people but following our visit to Lerwick we are not to gone on the pub scene there. I was thinking a supper club or something like that.. Any suggestions most welcome. My partner is a primary teacher and we were wondering if there was much call for supply teachers in the region. Any other tips and information is much appreciated. paulb
welcome if you have a normal pregnancy then the gilbert bain hospital will be fine any problems and they normally send you to aberdeen. i assume there will be plenty of supply work lots of 1 and 2 teacher schools so plenty of cover needed. there is plenty of social events out side of pubs. look at the right hand side of the home page lists whats on. it would help to know were your planning on living. nebuchadnezzar
We are planning on being near Lerwick. We visited at Easter and explored all the main isles and liked lerwick for its facilites and we also like burra... but all in all within about 20 mins of lerwick. thanks for your reply
paulb
20 mins from lerwick covers a big area. we live 28 miles away and the wife can do it in about 35 minutes without rushing. takes me 45. however its a totally diffrent life style from the town. if you can cope with the country then the local communities have a very active social event. if you choose to take part. nebuchadnezzar
we have lived in places as remote as anywhere on mainland shetland over the years so it wouldnt be a problem. I suppose it will all become clear once i get on the ground and see myself.
owdwife
If you are coming from England your partner will need to be registered with the General Teaching Council (GTC) in Edinburgh before she can teach in Shetland. But there should be a fair amount of supply work.

shevans
This is a good starting point for clubs etc. http://www.communitydirectory.shetland.gov.uk Andrea Ales
shetlandcars
But there should be a fair amount of supply work.Thats not the case and its only going to get worse with the planned school closures, if teaching is what you're looking for then now isn't the time to be moving here. MuckleJoannie
The use of supply teachers has been cut back considerably. Plus with school closures being planned teachers are generally being employed on short term contracts.
nebuchadnezzar
Thanks for all the replies everyone.. Whilst I appreciate that there are school closures coming i'm sure that there will always be a need for supply teachers, especially in an area where a teacher cannot just drive in from outside if the local supply is unavailable due to caring or other responsibilities which is all she is looking for. Thanks again
randomvoe
Voe and Brae are roughly 20 - 30 mins from Lerwick, both have plenty going on as well as other areas not too far. As has already been said if you can handle the country living rather than having immediate access to the facilities of Lerwick then you'd probably find any of the more rural areas wonderful for 'community activities' Shop notice boards are often FULL of local activity posters and details of upcoming events, they are often a good place to start looking once you arrive as well as the local paper of course! I think someone replied on another thread that local halls (most of them) are always willing to welcome volunteers especially if you are willing to get involved with new activities/clubs. randomvoe
There will be something available somewhere, it all comes down to how flexible you are willing to be on where you live. Some landlords wont want to rent out to the workforces and similarly some will only rent to them. Check out the estate agents up here Tait and Peterson http://www.tait-peterson.co.uk/pages/property_available.htm Anderson Goodlad http://www.anderson-goodlad.com/property-to-let Neil Risk http://www.neilrisk.com/ Dowle Smith and Rutherford http://www.d-s-r.co.uk/property.htm They should all be able to point you in the direction of properties for let as well as for sale. Keep an eye on http://www.shetnews.co.uk/property/ and http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/category/properties for others Hope that helps Andrea Ales
