Boy Racers

It doesn't matter whether you are chuffing around in a bean tin exhaust Saxo with a set of speakers in the back that were nicked from the main stage at T In The Park, a tricked up Scooby or a sheep poop infested Berlingo van.

It is the attitude of the driver that counts - not the lump of tin that surrounds them.

30 years ago I had a modified sports coupe that was forever attracting the attention of the police, one Lerwick carnival Saturday the policeman from whalsay was in Lerwick helping boost the number of local police. As soon as I drove past him he spotted the car and promptly stopped us, after inspecting the car and noting some of the non standard parts, he lectured me on how the mods could make the car unstable at speed in corners as they hadn't designed by the manufacturer - I told him the lights on the top of his police car would have the safe effect as they weren't designed by the manufacturer of the car. Needless to say he went ballistic...gave me two weeks to return the suspension to standard. I ignored him, he went back to whalsay and that was the end of that..

Was I a boy racer? - in some folks opinions quite probably, as above, I'd rather call myself an enthusiast. Knocking on 50 shortly, I may have matured in my behaviors, but I've still got a 330bhp subaru for fun, being a petrolhead is an addiction.

I did have a couple of eyewatering cars in the early eighties. The first was a Mk1 Capri GTXL with a 1750cc engine with high lift cam and a nice webber, also a single box Jan Speed exhaust. The 2nd was a 3.1 RS Escort MkII. Always getting pulled, it must have been the most examined cars in the area, used to annoy the plod as I did have the insurance for the cars including the upgrades... insurance was good then, simple.
