New feature - YouTube videos in message posts

Recommended Posts

I've hacked the forum software to allow www.youtube.com video players to be incorporated into posts

You should be able to see a new button named "YouTube" above the message text entry area. The button works along the same lines as the "Img" and "Url" buttons. I haven't had time to test it fully, and there's a lot of potential for bugs, so let me know in this thread whether it works or not. All feedback welcome

To include a YouTube video....

-> Select the video from the www.youtube.com website

-> Copy the file URL (i.e. the http://www.blahblah code) from the YouTube "About This Video" box

-> Paste the URL into the Shetlink message text entry area

-> Place the tags around the URL. This can be achieved in several ways....

----> Click the "YouTube" button once (which produces the opening tag), enter the URL and click the "YouTube" button again (which encloses the URL with the tag)

----> Highlight the URL and click the button once, which automatically encloses the URL inside the tags

----> Manually write the tags around the URL

For example, this code

produces this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LoZMruUe0

(The video clip is Chaka Khan singing Marvin Gaye's 'What's Goin On' with the Motown house band. My favourite singer singing my favourite song with my favourite band. You don't get much better than that!)

It makes me think.

peeriebryan, that is impressive hackinghttp://www.grampianlife.co.uk/Forum/images/smiles/clapping3.gif

I got annoyed first watch through when I clicked 'replay this video' and it opened up youtube, but you can just press the play button instead.

It really is impressive streaming technology. It seems to be Flash, but I couldn't manage to get Flash so smooth and detailed at same time.

Ah I see one of the risks with your YouTube feature which is that they're liable to become unavailable like the two above.

I'm try to polish up the Flash movie upload feature on my forum, to go with the image uploads. Don't know if anyone here has experience with the special Flash servers or ideas about the most accessible video formats?

What's happened with this code, it doesn't seem to be working any more? YouChoob stuff hasn't been showing on site for a while now for me (Firefox) and I'm told its not working for Chrome either. All you see is a great big piece of blank white background where the vid is supposed to be - code/link is still there, but it can only be seen when you include an earlier post with a video link in it as a quote.
