Lotto winners give further £2.5m to Yes

"A couple who won £161m on the Euromillions lottery have given a further £2.5m to the Scottish independence campaign in the past year.

Yes Scotland figures show Chris and Colin Weir each donated £1.25m, after a £1m donation the year before.

Overall, Yes Scotland said that it had received more than £3m in donations from April 2013 to May this year."

 

 

While I'm probably going to vote 'yes' myself, this seems like a complete waste of cash to me. How many food parcels could that buy?

Well at least they hail from the country that is voting as it seems most of the no campaign backers are from England

The Weir's have set up a charitable fund and put £5 million of the lottery funds in to that Trust.

Their view on the issue was coved in a letter to the national press in response to comments made about their donations which really covers why they choose to donate in line with long term political believes.

The Weir's setting up a charitable trust is commendable. £5million is a certainly a generous amount of money, which I'm sure can do a great deal...  but surely the extra £3 million they've spent on a Yes vote could have been served better if added to the trust? 

 

To be frank, I highly doubt an individual contribution to either campaign is likely to change the vote either way. Furthermore, the idea that the rich can throw vast sums of money at any political campaign to further their own ideological beliefs in the hope that it can effect the outcome is something I've always been uncomfortable with, regardless of the recipient party or cause.

Still, it's their money. Maybe it's a more worthy cause than Quads and Parties, like Scotland's last famously demonised lottery winner.

A very generous couple with the right ideas and not afraid to do what they feel will help to get the result we are working towards.

 

Has anyone spoken to them about the poverty that I'm suffering from? I'm sure that they would be terribly concerned!!!
