JGHR
What ever happens next , I think it would be a good idea to find Gary Robinson something more suitable to do. Yes, I think you are right. Frances144
Distortio
nobody expressing dismay that the vague 'more powers' gesture you voted for is already being sidelined and the emphasis has shifted to creating an english parliament? and it didn't take long for farage to be wheeled out to shoot down that offer of more powers. boris johnson too, he said the barnett formula should be "redesigned" in order to honour a "slightly reckless promise" looks like this is being seen by those in westminster as an opportunity to give us less influence and less revenue. who'd have thought? Kavi Ugl
Well, as the dust settles(thank goodness) I think a moment of reflection is needed. I was heartened by the Shetland vote, but I think what was missed by the media and the most vocal people during the campaign is the fact that most Shetlanders still do not consider themselves as "Scottish" nor do they trust Scotland. I also think many Shetlanders didn't want to see themselves living in a socialist basket case where the few would be paying for the many. I was getting my hair cut a few weeks ago and the lady hairdresser said "I'm not Scottish, I'm a Shetlander first and British second". Some can(and do) mock that attitude but it's true and reflects the fact that Shetland is just not Scotland. The Yes Shetland Facebook page is still defiant this morning though and has posted a picture of a Saltire flag flying on a flagpole at Sumburgh. It seems they just don't "get it"...... I also think that in terms of Scotland many people were put off the Yes side because of their aggressive and arrogant attitude. Sadly, I suspect there will be another referendum but that's for another day........ blue beetle
Alex Salmond must have suspected there was very little chance of winning the referendum when he asked for devomax to be included on the ballot paper. I also think most people would have been happy to vote for that too.I would think he must be quite happy today. He got devomax by the back door and made Cameron , Milliband and Clegg look like a bunch of panic merchants running around making up policy on the hoof. Its over to them now. Will they deliver. From watching the media this morning and the demands now coming from English MP,s and the Welsh I don't envy them. They may yet come to regret the "VOW".As I said Alex is probably looking as smug as ever today. Devomax and chaos in Westminster.
Popular Post Colin
Well, Salmond got what he wanted.. Got to keep the Pound Got to keep the Queen Got to keep Europe... Colin
[sigh] well yes, that much i could guess, but it wasn't the question. ok, say you vote 'no'. that's not the same as voting for your beloved ukips. there are other parties that support a 'no' position. Nice to see that you think that I am a UKIP supporter. Trying to 'pigeon hole' people always was a suspect move.. For future reference; I have no political affiliations whatsoever. I am NOT a UKIP supporter.I am NOT a SocialistI am NOT a Labour supporterandI am not a Tory supporter. In fact, the only thing I support is my own 'gut feelings'. Colin
nobody expressing dismay that the vague 'more powers' gesture you voted for is already being sidelined and the emphasis has shifted to creating an english parliament? Does your User ID reflect your thought processes? The underlying result of the referendum is that the United Kingdom is anything but United and that Government policies have, for to long, reflected on the needs(?) of the wealthy South East at everybody else's expense. The UK is a divided and, almost broken, country... What Salmod achieved was to highlight this. Result; Westminster has had a serious wake-up call and now needs to address a multitude of issues. The proposed 'transfer of powers' is a 'fudge' (and the politicians know this) that will have little or no long term benefit for the masses(?) and will only serve to create uneven taxation throughout the UK. The amount of money in circulation is being tightened all the time and, if Salmond (or anyone else) wants to spend more than he has on 'pet projects' then, he will have to raise the money himself through taxation. Big businesses will tell him where to go or, more likely, just up-sticks and re-locate. That only leaves one group to exploit. The poor sods who might still have a job. Don't forget that, amongst a number of other indiscretions, he supported Thatcher's Poll Tax. Leopards do not change their spots... The events of 1381 seem to be a lesson that has been forgotten by our 'rulers' and it was only naivety/treachery that saved them then. matlo
i see that David Cameron has appointed 'Lord Smith of Kelvin' as chairman of a new commission to examine further devolution for Scotland. That'll be the same Lord Smith of Kelvin who's chairman of Scottish and Southern Energy. It should be good news for Scott/Carmichael, Gary Robinson and those who believe that 'further powers' as result of Our Islands Our Future = an interconnector and a lot of windmills. One parasite less.... http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/sep/19/alex-salmond-resigns-first-minister-for-scotland <SARCASM /ON>Strange, If we were not voting for the SNP then, why would he have to....<SARCASM /OFF> Well, unlike a lot of other politicians, at least he has had the decency to fall on his sword.. I could think of a few around Westminster who might try something similar. Any word of Gordon Brown? From what I saw, he should probably get a knighthood for 'saving the union'. Certainly showed Cameron et al how it's done....
Kavi Ugl
I genuinely almost feel sorry for Alex Salmond. He looks a broken man today..... But they have reaped what they sowed. As I have stated, I loathe "yaa-boo" Westminster and it's as useless for Shetland as anywhere but the SNP just wouldn't "work sense" with Shetland in this campaign and the "offers" were as hollow and meaningless as the Better Together "Vow" made by the Con/Lab/Lib leaders. I actually see a political bomb exploding though because Westminster will, without a doubt, renege on the "Vow" and this will enflame support for the SNP and a new referendum. Here's a video of Alex Salmond's resignation. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/
