We get pleepsed at plenty by the SIC about how we should all build/buy boxes to keep full black bags in, or invest in wads of old net to hang over them, to keep the birds etc from tearing and spreading them, but this is what happens when SIC Housing are left in charge of the same job with a "rubbish shed".... http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq330/Redneck_Hillbilly0504/Shite%2013-07-15.jpg One of the double doors of this shed blew off its hinges at the start of April on account of the wood being rotten and unable to hold the bolts and screw nails any longer, leaving the second door with no means of securing it - No fault to the wood, its been there for at least twenty years, but more than likely its been there forty years. Housing repairs were informed on the day it happened, and 'Technical Officer' Ryan Smith was supposed to come and "inspect" it. Fast forward three months to the start of July and nothing had happened or been heard, so Housing repairs were contacted again, and again the issue was passed over to "Technical Officer" Ryan Smith for attention. Two more weeks have passed, and only the inevitable has happened. A few years ago some SIC bright spark decided to place wheelie bins in the shed instead of the bags being stored loose - nice in theory, but given that the shed often got quite full when it could be filled with bags and its whole capacity utilised (it serves sixteen addresses, plus numerous random passer-by drop offs), three bins inside the same shed has nowhere near the same capacity and as often as not they're full to overflowing before collection day comes. With no doors the place is the dining venue of choice for local cats from god knows how far round, which ends up in torn bags and bits and pieces of folk's crap blowing around in the wind. That's one thing, but sometime overnight whats been waiting to happen for three and a half months has happened - a bag has either fallen, or been knocked down by a climbing cat from the top of one of the overfull bins and rolled outside, where between cats and birds its been rapidly shredded. Yeah, its a mess, its a nusiance, but whatever. The real issue IMHO is that there are parks surrounding here containing numerous species of grazing livestock, and this crap is already blowing towards them, so if anyone round here loses a sheep or a cow or a horse etc, and the cause is having eaten wind-borne houshold plastic rubbish, sue SIC Housing for failing to maintain their facilities in a safe and secure condition, not whoever's rubbish it is. FFS, how long does it take to replace the wooden slatted side of a hut! Gillocks up the road has plenty of 2 x 3's and gate wood - anybody that can just bout mange to drive nail stright could do the job in a few hours.... We have had up to now three communities get back to us. one in yell which we sent up 2 skips and are in the process of picking up the full ones and replacing with empty. These will get weighed in to our yard and the community council will receive payment for the metal received. There for putting money back into community projects. The other community council is the Lerwick one which we are dealing with at the moment. where best to put the skips and how many. However we also know that there will be fly tipping and this in turn will not help either of us cos then we have to pay the council to dispose of general waste. Finally Sandwick allotments was put into this scheme and it helped to get rid of the waste they had. Bury the heavy stuff and pollute the ground that the sheep live off, burn what can be burnt and pollute the air we breath and finally, commit it to the deep and pollute the water around us where the fish try to live. They can't put up with the poison that we inflict upon them and that's why there are now boats out there stripping the waters of sand-eels and krill, and they're full of pollution themselves. However if your car is drivable and just need scrapped then drive in and you get £20.00 for it. Are you saying:- Only scrap metal can go in the skips? orAnything can go in the skips but any scrap metal gets weighed and the proceeds of sale go to the CC? Which is it? If only scrap metal can go in the skips, who has the responsibility to ensure that is happening and people are not dumping other stuff in them? Due to our establishment only being able to process and recycle metals of all kinds then yes we would be able to provide metal only skips. however as you have pointed out there will be ones who ruin it for others by dumping general waste and we then would have to pay the S.I.C for the disposal of such materials. So it would maybe make more sense to obtain general waste skips with the grants that have come available.
