Claadehol
I checked the computer today and read that the dump was open from 9 to 5, the times for the xmas new year fortnight being different. So I set off this afternoon for a 30 mile run only to find the dump closed. Maybe this means all times have changed or the gale force winds meant the dump was to be closed today! But whatever the reason maybe someone at the council could update the website, adding a closed due to weather warning or something. Maybe there was something on the radio that I have missed, but surely there are enough people employed by the council spending all day on computers, for someone to update the website. If I lived in Lerwick it's fine and handy, but the skips have been taken away from us simple country folk, so let's have some information on when we need to drive to the dump. That knackered dishwasher and other sundries will be leaving a large carbon footprint. Suffererof1crankymofo
paulb
police issued a no travel warning. unreasonable to expect workers to be there.
Aaron Foord
Common sense would have said that workers were unlikely to be at work with 90mph winds this morning and 70mph+ for the rest of the day. I am surprised that anyone got to work, especialy with no ferries running.
Claadehol
Well that's me told I guess! So nobody went to work today then.
paulb
no of course important life protecting services. wifes slept at the hospital often to make sure she was ok for her next shift. i would not say a recycling centre was worth risking it. if police say dont travel councils policy is not to travel. maybe a quick phone call could have saved you a trip. not really having a pop at you. but lerwick was hit pretty hard. Claadehol
Mot much chance of getting a reply on the phone at the weekend I would suggest, but hey! maybe there's an emergency number I can phone if it's a bit windy. Anyway I got the timber I required from the Brae building centre as the Lerwick suppliers were closed, Buildbase is usually closed but I thought some of them would have been open. They must be made of sterner stuff in Brae. they seemed unconcerned about the weather.
crofter
I would have left the dishwasher in the lee of the shed! Was it sheets of plywood you bought in Brae?

Suffererof1crankymofo
Boys from our company went to the dump today and the dump guys were there in the morning but decided to close due to the strong winds, Did they call in the Health & Safety Manager (who was no doubt on call) to do the risk assessment then? I mean, not that anyone lost anything off their roofs, the odd fence panel, wheelie bin, solar panel, and they wanted to dump it responsibly like. Updating the website to advise us mere plebs of the closure was obviously too much to ask, given that no SIC staff member ever works from home. JustMe
Council website it says:- service disruption due to weatherAll the information relating to disruption that has been caused to Council services by the weather will be listed here. Me thinks that should add "when office types are working".
Ghostrider
^ The key wording is maybe the "has been". It'll maybe be updated in the next few days....weeks.... Or then again, they might get someone who can actually use grammar to write up their site. Surely if it is a current and ongoing issue, the terminology should be "is being", or have I been mis-educated? JohanofNess
Did they call in the Health & Safety Manager (who was no doubt on call) to do the risk assessment then? It's the responsibility of the staff to stop working in an unsafe environment. They can of course stop and wait for the Council's health and safety rep to come out and advise on the safety of what they are doing but they should stop until they arrive if they believe there is high risk in continuing to work. George. Wonder just how long it will take before it becomes obvious to even the council who, in their wisdom, decided that they could save money by taking away the only method of disposal for large items that we have out in the country - unless we are willing to pay a ridiculous fee, in which case they may, or may not, stoop low enough to come and collect. More money for the council to spend on themselves!!!
