Freefield Centre 'Disposed' of?

Recommended Posts

it would be a very odd way to despose of property. a lease would only apply to land not building. unless your in flats even pulled down lans would not just revert to freeholder. say you had a lease of 999 years and 899 left you could rebuild subject to permission normally a small fee to land holder.

The Pensioners applied a builder to do a survey before they were turfed out. It was only the front windows that needed fixed/replaced. The said builder offered to maintain the building free for a year but was turned down. The saving by closing the building was to be £80,000. The SIC are only saving £40,000 as the other £40,000 is being used to keep the Pensioners at Islesburgh.

Just to let folk know that the lunch club is now held at Islesburgh Mon - Friday and starts at 12 noon - 1.00 pm. Entertainment is provided Tuesday and Friday straight after the meal.

The club is now run by the Royal Voluntary Service- contact Market House on 01595 743914. Transport may be available to those living in Lerwick

And for pensioners outside of Lerwick?  Wasn't that one of the points made by the SIC that there wasn't an equivalent for those pensioners living outside of Lerwick and hence it would be discriminatory to continue to fund the lunch club being at Freefield?  One evening a month for those outside of town is not an equivalent.

That was always a bit of a "hollow" argument..  They haven't got one so, you shouldn't have one is pretty slim grounds for closure.

Truth is that certain councillors and officials were always hell bent of closing Freefield and, it didn't matter much to them what the arguments in favour were, just like the public toilets and the bus waiting room, they were gong to close it anyway.

Any perceived saving were always going to be a "joke" paper exercise.  Trouble is, we let them get away with it..

The Pensioners fought tooth and nail to keep the centre open with no help from Joe Public. It wasn't Just a lunch club it was their social club it was open from 9am - 3pm for them to drop in. When the Pensioners rest room was closed a lot who attended there came to Freefield for the company and a cup of tea/coffee.

Ok, do the business research, come up with a viable business plan, raise the money, fit the building out, employ the staff and I'll be one of your first customers.   :thmbsup
