paulb
it would be a very odd way to despose of property. a lease would only apply to land not building. unless your in flats even pulled down lans would not just revert to freeholder. say you had a lease of 999 years and 899 left you could rebuild subject to permission normally a small fee to land holder.. MuckleJoannie
999 year leases are very rare in Scotland and I have never heard of one in Shetland.
Keedle
The Pensioners applied a builder to do a survey before they were turfed out. It was only the front windows that needed fixed/replaced. The said builder offered to maintain the building free for a year but was turned down. The saving by closing the building was to be £80,000. The SIC are only saving £40,000 as the other £40,000 is being used to keep the Pensioners at Islesburgh.
MuckleJoannie
I can't remember where I heard it but I seem to remember that the SIC overheads for Freefield were about £40,000. That is expenditure that has not been saved, it has to be spread out over other services. So the net saving to the SIC is £0.00.

Wasn't that one of the points made by the SIC that there wasn't an equivalent for those pensioners living outside of Lerwick and hence it would be discriminatory to continue to fund the lunch club being at Freefield? One evening a month for those outside of town is not an equivalent.
Keedle
The Freefield had clients from Unst to Sumburgh. Granted they made their own way there. Most of them using buses that stopped outside the centre. Suffererof1crankymofo

Truth is that certain councillors and officials were always hell bent of closing Freefield and, it didn't matter much to them what the arguments in favour were, just like the public toilets and the bus waiting room, they were gong to close it anyway. Any perceived saving were always going to be a "joke" paper exercise. Trouble is, we let them get away with it.. Keedle
The Pensioners fought tooth and nail to keep the centre open with no help from Joe Public. It wasn't Just a lunch club it was their social club it was open from 9am - 3pm for them to drop in. When the Pensioners rest room was closed a lot who attended there came to Freefield for the company and a cup of tea/coffee. furbieontour
suuusssiiieee
I'm hearing a whisper that the Freefield building will soon be an Indian eatery.
orkneypaul
No another Indian, we have more than enough (not knocking them as they are superb), why not authentic Italian or Tapas bar I could go on but I winna , As far as another Indian you can stick that up your ass (Thankfully would only burn one way then) , common Shetland get some variety and imagination in your ethnic eating,

BGDDisco
I think a Seafood Restaurant would be a guaranteed winner in Lerwick. Windwalker and concerned shetlander
