Its actually all new Volvo models will be either EV or Hybrid from 2019 , current models will continued to be produced in either petrol or diesel well after 2019........................!

....and if the market doesn't consume an adequate number for their liking, they'll be promptly shelved and new oil guzzlers that shift enough units in the marketplace will take their place.

 

Nothing in business is set in tablets of stone.

 

So, Volvo are going to take a gamble to see if the EV Market is big enough to satisfy them, good luck to them, but let's just seem how many wheels they manage to pass through the showrooms before equating that to a full EV/Hybrid takeover in the marketplace.

I'm in my mid-40s and been driving since the late 1980s. I'm a petrolhead with 3 cars but I'm not blind to the future. Norway is gearing up to ban ICE cars by 2025. So if they can do it sooner, they will. France announced yesterday it plans to ban all ICE cars by 2040, which seems an awfully long way off in the future, but is only a little over 22 years away, and again if they can roll it out quicker, they will. Other countries are also considering it, including the UK.  It only needs the infrastructure to be put in place, and that is ever expanding as we sit here looking at our computer screens. Most cars will be charged at home overnight, or at people's place of work anyway. It's a two-prong approach really. Not just EVs, but renewable energy.  I've said it in a previous post, Shetland can be self-sufficient with its energy needs purely from renewables. Orkney is, so why not us? We don't need to be connected to the national grid. Anyway, watch this video from 2 days ago, the chap is heavily involved with the motor industry and talks about what is coming down the road, so to speak..........

^ Industry doesn't dictate what folk do, governments don't dictate what folk do, unless the folk let them.

 

If sales don't materialise and the governments who enact such legislation get voted out and replaced with one who promises to postpone/repeal it, a whole new order comes in to play. In the 80's governments and makers were plugging and churning out diesels on the, 'Cheaper to run and not filling the air with lead tag'......in the 90's LPG conversions were the way got go they told us. Where are they now....

 

Crystal Ball gazing is a fickle game, there seems little doubt that EV's will be part of motoring, short term at least, there's enough support for that now, but whether they're yet another flash in the pan or a part of the longer term future, let alone "the" future, that will only be decided by the motoring public as the future unfolds.

 

Corporate and Government may try to persuade, cajole, bribe or threaten the motoring habits of the public, but in the end, they cannot dictate them.

Hmmm.....Not all the marques are so keen to put all that many of their eggs in the EV basket....

 

"......the fact is we [the UK] don't currently produce enough electric to power a country filled with EV's. We aren't against EV's, in fact we're developing our own but Hydrogen is an abundant resource and a hydrogen powered car can be refuelled in a matter of minutes, plus it offers a much greater range between refill times".

All the more reason to play the long game and see how things progress before committing to any one as being "the future".
